Your easiest move is to select a browser which updates the display while
it is calculating. Opera does that (Opera 11.64, Win XP sp3); not MS
IE, Firefox, Safari, Chrome.

One can write to window.status, which sometimes updates while
calculating. In MS IE 8, Opera, Safari, yes, bottom of screen.
Firefox, Chrome, no. In each case that is probably with default
settings, and there may be relevant options.
