Statistics are only as good as the method of getting the numbers for them 
(and the people compiling them).  Web statistics usually are only as good as 
browser detection permits.  Browser detection is only as good as the 
browser, and the user, permits.

At this point we only know that we do not know for sure how and why such 
numbers came about.  (An increasing concern in using Web statistics, both 
from Net Applications and StatCounter.com, is the increasing share of 
“unknown”/“other” browser versions: now about 16.38 to 60 % on 
StatCounter.com and 22 to 42.39 % with Net Applications.  Frankly, those are 
becoming bad jokes of a stat.)

We do know that Windows XP support is in the process of being terminated, 
which affects versions of Internet Explorer before 9; but again, in which 
timeframe and to what extent they will be affected, we do not know.
