I have tried to use validation-api but no success.

My IDE uses Java 8 and it is perfectly happy with the code.

In this project source and target version of Java is 1.6. The compile
does not like those annotations.

What gives? Ideas?

@Nullable are Java 8 annotations. You need to either remove them or set the
source version (and possibly the target version, I'm not sure) to 1.8.
