Smart phones need a common langugage for many phones. Android-Java is
fitting the bill.

Applets are dying, seemingly at Oracle's plan.

Server-side is doing well because of scalability.

Note that languages are not really scalable or non-scalable.

Frameworks are scalable or non-scalable.

Basic Java SE library as in 1.0-1.1 (before it became Java SE!) is
not even that friendly for writing scalable frameworks.

But IBM, SUN, Oracle, BEA etc. managed to design a Java EE
that scaled nicely up to a certain level.

And later Google, FaceBook, Twitter etc. added frameworks
that scales up very high.
