How do I update this thing? I can never figure out the proper way and I get it really messed up.

I went to Help, selected Install New Software, selected the "http://download.eclipse.org/releases/oxygen" URL, hit select all, then next...
Apparently this is not the right way. I was just trying to update the IDE core and apparently installed a bunch of features I neither want nor need.
After this I started getting an error message on startup about SLP Discovery, and I have a bunch of new junk on the toolbar...

I assume SLP Discovery is something new I just accidentally installed and don't need, now how to get rid of it? I select Help>About, then Installation Details. Now what? I found something that has something under it called SLP, but I select it and click the uninstall button and get a message this cannot be uninstalled because something else depends on it. It doesn't show the dependencies. I think I've installed a lot I don't need but how do I get rid of it without knowing dependencies??

So I'm at that Installation Details window just uninstalling random things I don't believe I'll need. That error seems to have gone away. I still don't know how to just properly upgrade the IDE core.

I tried upgrading from within an existing Eclipse installation
twice. Once to Neon, once to Oxygen. Both were epic failures.

I resorted to downloading the latest build with features that came
closest to my needs, installing that, and adding on any pieces I
 found necessary.

Somehow my upgrade to Oxygen was an epic fail but I got it sorted out. Then trying to upgrade to a newer Oxygen build got a lot of crap I don't need installed, but I have multiple PCs here so I did a clean install on a second one then uninstalled any feature on the first one that wasn't on the second one. (still much easier than sorting out a broken .net install)
