I did not follow it very closely, but on the H2 mailing list I have seen several times queries about production inquiries. The complexity of a wrapper layer can easily outweigh the complexity of a couple of lines of boilerplate code. You might gain a trivial decrease in complexity of some classes but gain a huge increase in complexity from maintaining the wrapper layer in your architecture overall. Do not be seduced by the call of the overengineered wrapper or framework.

The getDatabaseMetaData needs to be getMetaData. This gives 3 and 0, while the correct version is: 3.16.1. >> isDBLocked > > And that can't be done using standard JDBC? Not as far as I know. It is something specifically with SQLite3. Only one program can mutate the database. If you do something with the DBBrowser, but forget to update, that wrecks havoc. That is why I have a cronjob that twice every hour checks all databases on being locked. -- Cecil Westerhof Senior Software Engineer LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/cecilwesterhof

getDatabaseProductVersion() does give 3.16.1.
MetaData is something I should look into. In my abstract class I
added:
void displayMetaData() throws SQLException {
DatabaseMetaData dbmd = conn.getMetaData();
System.out.println("driver version = " + dbmd.getDriverVersion());
System.out.println("driver name = " + dbmd.getDriverName());
System.out.println("db name = " + dbmd.getDatabaseProductName());
System.out.println("db ver = " + dbmd.getDatabaseProductVersion());
}

Agreed. H2 (I implemented it) does give correct results. But less as getDatabaseProductVersion (1.3 -> 1.3.176 (2014-04-05), so it is better to use that. Both H2 and SQLite3 give the correct information. >> MetaData is something I should look into. > > There is a ton of useful information including some about the > SQL dialect supported. The question about whether to implement something for each database has already been discussed extensively, so I will only comment on the question in the subject. It is my subjective impression that: * Oracle and DB2 are used in production by many Java sites * MySQL/MariaDB and PostgreSQL are used in production by some Java sites * SQLServer is used in production by few Java sites * "small" databases like SQLite, H2 and Derby usually in embedded mode are used for: - development - for Java SE applications that need flexible local storage Arne
