What is the gcc-java good for these days ? I am interested in creating
simple command line apps which parse text, manipulate files and connect
to sockets. Basically, JDK 1.1 stuff. Will it work ?

I am interested in native code binaries on Linux x86 and x86-64
platforms. According to description, it can be done. Are those
standalone or do they depend on some shared libraries ? I'd like to copy
and use them on other Linux machines.

My C++ and C are way too rusty, to start again with it.

Yesterday, GCJ was removed from the GCC sources.

You can always use an older version, of course, but chances that you
receive community support and bug fixes are very slim.
