Vivaldi claims to be using the Chrome PDF viewer as a plugin, but as I
said, it only works for smaller files, so make of that what you will.

In addition, and unlike xpdf, it neither shows the current page number
nor allows it to be entered as a short cut to that page. Nor does it
appear to display a section/chapter index, if one is part of the PDF, as
a sidebar. Both are necessary if you're trying to read a big PDF in
multiple sessions or using it as a reference.

Sadly applets aren't dead yet.
We spent a few hours this week getting the applets to work for our users.
FedEx print shipping labels runs an applet.
GSA vendor portal runs ActiveX in an applet.
These currently still work with the Java plugin in IE, or in Firefox with the IE Tab plugin.
GSA also requires you to disable TLS 1.1 and 1.2 in both the browser settings and the Java Control Panel.

Lest too much premature wailing ensue: The cited article says
Oracle intends that Java *9* will *deprecate* applets, which means
they'll still be supported for some considerable time to come. In
fact, Oracle does not intend to deprecate with "forRemoval=true",
meaning Java *10* will still support (but discourage) applets and
that they won't entirely disappear until at least Java *11*.

So: Kiss your Applet good-bye, yes, but make it a lingering kiss.

I noticed that part, but they are still a pain to support.

The FedEx print labels stops working at least half the time we push a new version of Java. No error message, it just doesn't print, and horrible support that tells us nothing except try reinstalling Java.

The GSA login, disabling the TLS and using ActiveX that looks like it was designed in 1995?

Chrome and apparently Safari have killed applets.
I believe they also won't run in Edge, which is why MS still includes IE in Windows 10. Even MS doesn't want anyone using ActiveX anymore.

Several online crossword puzzles are available as Java applets,
notably the syndicated New York Times puzzle and the Newsday puzzle.

JDK 9 is officially here, Applet is officially deprecated. Anyone still using them will have to change soon.

Do you speak of the Applets, or of creators of malicious applets? ;-)
