| Subject | eclipse workdir copied to new machine ... fail |
| Message-ID | <slrnnqjmr8.456.avl@login.logic.tuwien.ac.at> |
I had eclipse on my old machine (Ubuntu 14.04 32bit) and moved
the complete home directory to a new machine (Ubuntu 16.04 64bit)
Eclipse on old machine was 3.7.0, on new machine is 3.8.1
When I start eclipse on new machine, it shows my projects, but appears
to have no idea about languages... it doesn't syntax highlight the Java
sources.
The "Project Explorer" shows me each directory separately, rather than
showing the relevant packages, and when I "Refresh" the Project, it once
attempted to build, but immediately stopped with:
Errors occurred during the build.
Errors running builder 'Java Builder' on project 'lanterna'.
java.lang.NullPointerException
nothing else -- not even a stack trace. There is no "Build" entry in
the context menu for the project within the "Project Explorer" view.
It also forgot all the (git) repository information ("Team" submenu).
Any similar experience with solution? Any idea off the top of head?
What parts of the workdir can/should I delete without also killing my
project setups, Run/Debug configurations, etc.?
Thanks in advance. (it's my private machine, and not urgent)
PS: ubuntu eclipse-packages currently installed on new machine:
eclipse eclipse-jdt eclipse-platform eclipse-platform-data
eclipse-pde eclipse-rcp

The eclipse website doesn't know of any 3.8.*, and even it's "About dialog" didn't mention any of eclipse's release names, so that seems to be some private versioning of the Debian/Ubuntu world... Next attempt was downloading and running the "eclipse installer", which eventually barfed about some parts of it signed with an already expired(2015) certificate, and went back to offering an install button, which repeated the cycle up to and including the certificate problem. Finally, downloading the "Eclipse IDE for Java Developers" and unpacking that seems to give me a working IDE, and all those things previously not working in 3.8.1 do work just fine here. This is "Neon Release (4.6.0)" now. Problem (apparently so far) solved. It's just a pity that it won't be updated with the system's package management facilities this way.

On my usual Fedora systems I've sorted out similar package-related problems by removing and reinstalling the package with DNF (thats' Fedora's equivalent of apt-get). So far that approach has worked OK and hasn't lost anything I wanted to keep - AND - I end up still running distro-maintained applications. My guess is that it works because no part of a package's contents is ever put into a /home directory, so the remove/install cycle doesn't try to change user-local settings. A well-written package should look at the user-specific configuration and upgrade it as needed When you first run the newly installed version. If I need something that isn't included in a a distro's standard or extra packages, i.e. I've have to compile it locally, I *always* fiddle the autoconfig and/or make files to install it in /usr/local/bin and to put its default configuration in /usr/local/etc because this minimises interference with standard distro packaged stuff. I also move /usr/local to /home/local, replacing /usr/local with a symlink to /home/local. Since /home is in a separate partition which isn't affected by a distro install or upgrade this means that my self-compiled applications automatically survive distro reinstalls or upgrades. I hope the above is useful and isn't regurgitating too much that you already know. -- martin@ | Martin Gregorie gregorie. | Essex, UK org |

Does Fedora's package repository contain a current version of eclipse? (where "current" means: less than 3 years old) Not that I'd switch to Fedora, but I'd be curious if there is a general incompatibility of newer eclipse releases with system's package mechanisms, or if this is just a shortcoming of Debian/Ubuntu. Recent instructions seem to suggest downloading eclipse tar-balls (installer or specific) over Fedora package repositories, too.

A quick check shows 233 eclipse packages(!). The 'dnf info' about the eclipse-jdt package (Eclipse Java Development Tools) says it is v 4.5.2 while the eclipse-cdt package says it is v 8.8.1, so I don't understand how these version numbers, which seem to be the package version, might relate to the Eclipse software version. Since I don't use Eclipse, that's about as far as I can go without installing it. BTW, I'm running Fedora 23, with Fedora 24 recently announced as the latest and greatest version. -- martin@ | Martin Gregorie gregorie. | Essex, UK org |
