But when you object because of a need by big business, that does
not make a solution unsuitable in all areas. I would not expect
something to be used in an area that it does not work in, but that
should not stop it being used in an area in which it does work.

That's correct - because it supports packed decimal. Java (and
Javascript - which is an entirely different language and off-topic in
this newsgroup) do not.

A lack of support in javascript is not a Java problem.

But you don't seem to understand the only thing the two languages have
in common is a "j", two "a"s and a "v".

Embedded languages don't count? JavaFX WebView executes Javascript.

And there is also:

(new ScriptEngineManager()).getEngineByName("js")

And I would expect people to be very tolerant of JavaScript in
these two contexts.

But neither was the case for this sub-thread.

I do understand the difference. I also understand that
discussing how things are done or can be done in other languages can
help with whatever language one is using.

There are two words that have different meanings: "disagree" and
"disagreeable". It is possible to disagree without being
disagreeable, and I advise you to look into it.

And I suggest you remain on topic. Javascript is off topic in this
newsgroup. I tried telling you nicely - but you ignored it. So I had
to be more firm. I advise you look into how to stay on topic.

And you still haven't described how Java (not javascript) handles
decimal numbers with at least 18 digits of accuracy.

So? Someone who wants to can bring it up.

Yes, COBOL's implementation of packed decimal numbers versus Java's
implementation. Not versus JavaScripts.

I don't think it can: he's already said that Javascript's only internal
numeric representation is a 64 bit floating point number, i.e. a double,
which we already know can not support 18 significant digits since its
only got 53 bits for the mantissa, i.e. just under 15 significant digits.
This is compounded by inaccurate basic arithmetic operations thanks to
inexact numeric representation. In this JavaScript is no different from
most BASICs. The innumerate might try to use these languages for exact
financial calculations. I would not.

Well he actually asked for Java not JavaScript.

     Just under *16* digits. (log10 2 ~= .30103 times 53 bits gives
~15.95 decimal digits. So 15 usable.

Actually, Mr. Gregorie, the innumerate one would be you in this
case. I know how floating-point works internally so I know that what
I am doing is safe (within limits).

One uses integers represented in floating-point and scales. It
is a floating-point implementation of fixed-point.

the 53 bits includes the sign, so the magnitude is 2^52, which is 4.5^15
so only 14 usable digits. In this Java and javascript are identical.

Not really - you're disregarding the effect of inexact representation. It
may be OK with relatively few arithmetic operations in small values, but
the errors can accumulate rather fast if the number of operations on each
value grows (and especially if currency conversions or interest is
involved) and a lot of the values are aggregated.

I'll stick to using Java longs, BigDecimal and COBOL (if I must) for
anything more complex than personal accounting systems, thanks.

That caret should be an "E".

Oddly, the sign and the mantissa are stored non-contiguously, but
still the claim of 53.
 ^
>so only 14 usable digits. In this Java and javascript are identical.

Nope. Since there are at least 10^15 values, there are at least
15 digits of precision.

With 52 bits, that gives ~15.65 decimal digits. 15 for my use.

No, I am not. I simply do not represent anything inexactly.

>may be OK with relatively few arithmetic operations in small values, but

Nope. Integers can be represented exactly to 15 digits. A
15-digit number is not generally considered to be small.

>the errors can accumulate rather fast if the number of operations on each

Not if you stick to the integers. There are other values one can
use (non-integers with fractional parts that are multiples of 1/2,
1/4, 1/8, etc. up to a certain limit), but I do not use them.

>I'll stick to using Java longs, BigDecimal and COBOL (if I must) for

     As you wish.

It has been mentioned a couple of times in this thread.

Except there are two problems with it. It is very slow, compared to a
native BCD implementation. And it doesn't support the DECIMAL type in
databases.

Which severely limits its usefulness, especially with big data.

Yes, it is a problem for big data. But you wouldn't understand what it's
