But when you object because of a need by big business, that does
not make a solution unsuitable in all areas. I would not expect
something to be used in an area that it does not work in, but that

And there is also:
(new ScriptEngineManager()).getEngineByName("js")
And I would expect people to be very tolerant of JavaScript in
these two contexts.
But neither was the case for this sub-thread.

Of course.

I do understand the difference. I also understand that
discussing how things are done or can be done in other languages can
help with whatever language one is using.
There are two words that have different meanings: "disagree" and
"disagreeable". It is possible to disagree without being
disagreeable, and I advise you to look into it.

Just under *16* digits. (log10 2 ~= .30103 times 53 bits gives
~15.95 decimal digits. So 15 usable.

Actually, Mr. Gregorie, the innumerate one would be you in this
case. I know how floating-point works internally so I know that what
I am doing is safe (within limits).
One uses integers represented in floating-point and scales. It
is a floating-point implementation of fixed-point.

It may be OK with relatively few arithmetic operations in small values, but the errors can accumulate rather fast if the number of operations on each value grows (and especially if currency conversions or interest is involved) and a lot of the values are aggregated. I'll stick to using Java longs, BigDecimal and COBOL (if I must) for anything more complex than personal accounting systems, thanks. -- martin@ | Martin Gregorie gregorie. | Essex, UK org |

That caret should be an "E".
Oddly, the sign and the mantissa are stored non-contiguously, but
still the claim of 53.

Nope. Since there are at least 10^15 values, there are at least
15 digits of precision.
With 52 bits, that gives ~15.65 decimal digits. 15 for my use.

No, I am not. I simply do not represent anything inexactly.

Nope. Integers can be represented exactly to 15 digits. A
15-digit number is not generally considered to be small.

Not if you stick to the integers. There are other values one can
use (non-integers with fractional parts that are multiples of 1/2,
1/4, 1/8, etc. up to a certain limit), but I do not use them.

As you wish.
