It is not very obvious what you want to see.

You take the most basic Java program using JDBC you can think of
and then you use DECIMAL in database and BigDecimal in Java instead of
INTEGER in database and int in Java.

There is nothing to it.

Actually, it does answer the question.

Now you want to ask a different question, but that doesn't mean your prior question is unanswered. You are just pulling a standard rhetorical technique of redefining the question after the fact then speaking as if the other person somehow got it wrong, rather than the truth.

Nor should you. Try it yourself. You are the one challenging the official documentation. It is not our job to dance to your tune because you are unable or unwilling to program such a simple thing yourself rather than argue incessantly. Get off your keister and take responsibility for your own dubiety.

If you want me to code something for you, I offer to do it for $1,000.00 US, payment first, code second, delivered as is with no warranty as to fitness for any purpose whatsoever.

If you are any kind of programmer at all, Jerry, you'll take this one on yourself, or be known a poseur henceforth.

Nope, the answer to the question is sample working code.

If it's so easy, then you should be able to provide a working example.

No.

But why should I?

This is very basic Java programming problem.

In CLJP it is not common to write complete code for problems
that are basic Java for beginners.

Students should do their own homework. Study the
available material and make an attempt before
asking for help.

In this case you seems to have the role of a student
needing help with basic database programming in Java.

You should try and write the code yourself.

If you can't get it to work, then post the code here
with a description of the error you get and we will
provide guidance on how to solve the problem.

Then it should be easy for you to provide a working example. The fact
you can't says much for your claims - and your abilities.

I haven't been a student for over 45 years. But I have helped a lot of
students - but providing them with working examples. Something you are
obviously unable to do.

If one decide to solve the problem by doing the add server side.

Then if the server side is in Java, then it do become a Java
problem.

JS client server talking to JAX-RS services in Java is a relative
common setup.

Correct.

It is a Java solution to the problem described.

The easiest is probably to do that add server side.

JAX-RS service if the server side is Java.

But this is never done: every financial system I've worked on has always
stored and manipulated monetary values as signed integers of the
appropriate length for the job, so GBP amounts are held as pence and USD
as cents: storing values and ints will be appropriate for most SME and
individual accounts, but you'd need to use a long int for banks and large
businesses.

Visible representations will use whatever is appropriate to the users for
inputting and displaying values by using more or less complex editing
routines. Commercial banking applications will abbreviate large amounts,
e.g I've worked with one multi-currency accounting system that would
accept "1.5M USD" and understand that was $US 1,500,000.00 -it would
also understand that a value of 5 with a UK pound currency code sould be
displayed as "0.05 GBP", or 5 pence in UK money. BTW, contrary to popular
Western superstition, not all currencies have a unit divisible by 100:
while the Hungarian Forint is theoretically split into 100 filler I've
never seen anything smaller than the Forint in daily use or as an
advertised price. Same goes for the Italian Lira. At the other end of the
scale Dirhams or Dinars (used in several Middle Eastern countries) have
three decimal parts in some countries.

Lower values are super easy to handle in COBOL, since when you specify an
edited numeric value there us a distinction made between '.', which is
just another interpolated character and 'V' which will be aligned with
the decimal point is if the value has one, e.g. for US money the internal
storage might be described as "PIC S9(9)" (a signed 9 digit integer) and
its external representation might be "PIC $$,$$$,$$9.99 CR" so that a
value of 102400 would be output as " $1,024.00 " and a value of -5
would be output as " $0.05 CR", but dealing with very large
amounts in a system that allows abbreviations and handles multiple
currencies isn't simple in any language.

Really?

I would expect that to be the case only in languages without BCD/decimal
support like C.

Cobol, Java, C# etc. would not need to do that.

I think the answer is the "it depends".

In Java BigInteger explicitly doesn't use BCD and I suspect that
BigDecimal uses unpacked BCD rather than the more traditional packed BCD
format.

COBOL's internal representation of integers often depends on the
underlying hardware. For instance, the ICL 1900 used 24 bit words and had
no native BCD handling, so all integer COBOL values were mapped onto
single or double length integers.

MicroFocus COBOL is likely to use unpacked BCD despite it being
relatively slow for large numbers simply because an unpacked BCD
implementation should be portable across any byte-oriented hardware and
would have been useful back in the 8 and 16 bit days.

OTOH, many IBM COBOLs can use BCD because all IBM mainframe and AS/400
(plus successors) have hardware support for packed BCD arithmetic, though
the Power chip series doesn't seem to support BCD arithmetic, so would
necessarily use unpacked BCD implemented in software or microcode.

In all cases, attempting to use packed BCD without direct hardware
support isn't a good ides because it would run like molasses.

Not that it matters a whole lot, but the current (Java 1.8)
version of BigDecimal uses a BigInteger along with an `int' scale
factor (and takes shortcuts with a `long' if the BigInteger is not
too large). No BCD in sight.

Interesting: the class-level documentation says nothing about the method
used. Makes sense too, because even overflowing along two or more 32 bit
ints would surely be faster than using a byte list for unpacked BCD.

Not really. Assembler support for BCD can be very efficient, even in
processors which don't support BCD. No, it's not as efficient as
processors which do support it - but it can also be extended to as many
digits as necessary.

Writing it in Java would be quite slow, though.

Either way. Which way is used would depend on the processor, and would
be transparent to any HLL.

Yes.

But there are two different aspects here.

Does the programming language allow a programmer to use type with
desired behavior.

How does the programming language implement that in a specific
version on a specific platform.

Cobol, Java, C# and more languages have such types.

C and more languages does not.

In most cases the language that has such types do not specify
how it is implemented.

It can be different between different platforms.

It can be different between different versions of the
compiler.

If my memory remember correct then VAX Cobol changed
from using BCD instructions to using binary integer with implied
decimal in some version when VAX changed from having BCD
instructions in real hardware to being emulated.

It is one of these things I would just leave to the compiler/VM/RT.

Arne
