Can I run a JavaFX program as a JWS (Java WebStart) or do I have to
stick to Swing/AWT for GUIs in JWS programs?

I'm not sure where to look for that information....

I cannot see why you should not be able to do so.

http://docs.oracle.com/javafx/2/get_started/basic_deployment.htm

seems to confirm that you indeed can.

Thanks Arne.

I think I'm going to write a Hello World in JavaFX and then see if I can
get it running on my other laptop. That should prove it one way or the
other with a minimum of effort.

The other thing I'd love to confirm is whether a JavaFX in a JWS
environment can do database access. I have some data in a DB2 database
that I want my JavaFX app to be able to access from whatever computer it
is on. (I might move the data to a MySQL database on a public server for
my real application.)

I believe you can.

By signing the jar and add permissions to the JNLP.

Excellent! Then I should be able to do what I want to do. Thank you!

You can run JavaFX in Swing, using javafx.application.Platform.runLater from javafx.embed.swing.JFXPanel
