Hi all,

I'm mostly just a troll here, I do most programming in C++ now. But I like to read the message board to keep my java skills sharp. I've noticed recently, for certain users, I will get notified via email that they've posted, but when I go to the forum, I don't see their post. Further, I see other users quoting their posts so I know they are there.

I also saw somebody else complaining about the same thing in a thread, but it wasn't addressed and I can't find the post now. Any ideas whats going on?

Thanks.

I forget why they said it works that way. I view it in Google Groups. I know someone called Stephan Ram posts and I never see it. I believe they said you can subscribe like a mailing list, and someone recommended Thunderbird to view, that you should be able to see those? I think it's easier to use the Groups.

You mean newsgroups, aka NNTP for the initials of the protocol. These are
rather like bulletin boards and there are around 25,000 of them on a huge
range of topics.

You need three things to use newsgroups:

- the name of this newsgroup: comp.lang.java.programmer

- a newsreader. These generally work more like an e-mail reader than
a web forum. As others have said, the Thunderbird mail reader can also
be used to read and post to newsgroups.
Other good choices are pan (for Linux) or Forte's Agent (for Windows)
Agent isn't free except for a trial period, it costs a whole $30.

- a news server for your newsreader to connect to.
Try news.eternal-september.org - this is a free server
If you're asked for a port, its 119

To use: Install the newsreader and configure it to use your preferred
news server and ask it to show the list of newsgroups supported by the
news server. Then select the newsgroups you want to subscribe to by
scrolling down the list and selecting them. Then ask the newsreader to
download the last 'n'; days posts and you're away.

A little history: newsgroups are one of the first Internet services,
along with e-mail and FTP file transfers. Google groups was formerly Deja
News, a searchable newsgroup archive until Google bought it and made it
into what is effectively a non-expiring news server. In the process they
changed the web GUI (for the worse IMO, though it was never wonderful)
and introduced some bugs that have never been fixed. Chief among them are
the way it randomly fails to show some NNTP server posts to Google Group
users and the equally random way it fails to pass some Google Group posts
to the wider NNTP server network.

Usenet is not a guaranteed eventual consistency distributed system.

Things happen.

A server can miss some posts and not recover properly due to a good
old fashioned software bug.

A message can be cancelled and some servers do the cancel and others
do not.

It is possible to add certain headers to messages that will make
some servers bit not all use non-default archiving policy.

Even though it is expected behavior then setting followup to
a group not in the original dist list can make a thread suddenly
appear.

Also replies to a message expired on your server (but not on
posters server) can also make thread suddenly appear.

Arne
