As for Java on the server, the competition is heating up: -

Linux and OS/X and nothing to do with MONO.

Is Java the new COBOL?

IMHO Larry should've got into bed with Google rather punch them in the nose! At least then we might still have my beloved Applets.

Given that this is not ready yet, we shall see if it merits the handle "competition".

Given that COBOL remains in production after nearly sixty years and remains a viable platform, one can only hope so.

You're nearly the only one.

That would be good. According to IBM estimates, there are more than 2
billion lines of COBOL code created each year.

I'd love to see that much Java code created.

I expect the impact to be very little.

It will change choice for those that:
* have a mandatory requirement to run on Linux (or OS/X but that is not
  a server OS)
* prefer ASP.NET over other web frameworks (Java EE, PHP, RoR etc.)
* have a mandatory requirement for the web framework to be backed by a
B$ company (Microsoft size is OK, Xamarin size is not OK)

I don't think many companies will match all those.

> Is Java the new COBOL?

Not yet.

Java is still going up.

But it seems very likely that it eventually will be (eventually
programming language start to decline). Just give it 20-30 more years.

I think that would have been good for Java.

Make embedded Java SE and Dalvik/ART merge.

> At least then we might still have my beloved Applets.

I don't think so. Google is also on the "HTML 5" train.
