Hello,

When I try to upgrade from Java 7 to Java 8, the installation of a proprietary application fails.

The application works perfectly with Java 7 (JRE v1.6.0_18).

My employeer won't let me say any more than what I have already stated! I probably said too much already. That last part is a joke. :-(

Anywary, can a few of you knowledgeble people outline the appropriates steps that I should follow to be able to use Java 8 with my proprietary application. Beyound going back to the company that produces the application, do you have suggestions that I can try.

Do I have several routes to follow.

Thank you,
Randy Steppenson

P.S.: That's all I'm allowed to disclose.

Without information on exactly why it fails, I think your only choice is
to go back to the company who wrote the application.

If this is a commercial application, you're probably not the only one
with this problem.

What Java? Sun, OpenJDK...?

That is Java 6 and not Java 7.

Even knowledgeable people do not have the power to read your mind, so it
will be difficult to recommend anything. In my experience applications
often work with Java 8 even if they are written for Java 6. But there
are also cases where they don't - I have seen this related to Swing and
if that was the case without changing the application you are typically
not going to get it to work. So going back to the company that wrote
the application is probably not the worst idea here.

Since you neither disclose the error nor the type of operating system or
anything else you need to be extremely lucky to find a reply that
contains a solution for your case.

Good luck!

All I can suggest are rather generic, as you might expect ..

     - Twist the tails of the application's supplier. If you've licensed
it from a third party, raise merry Hell with their technical support
department. If it's developed in-house, get your boss to drag the
developers back from their newer (cushier?) assignments to fix what they
left behind. If it was developed in-house and the developers have left
the company, ...

     - Study all the error and status messages you can capture, and try
to understand what might have provoked them. Perhaps there are ways to
run the installation in a "verbose" mode -- for example, if part of it
is written in Java you might be able to crank up a logging level. If
parts of the installation procedure are shell scripts (or similar) that
you can modify, try salting them with "Reached point X" messages to help
narrow down the point of failure (if the script got as far as X but died
before reaching Y, focus your attention on what's between).

     - Instead of upgrading, try a "from scratch" installation on a
clean system (probably a test machine). If things work better you may
not even need to diagnose the problem: Rather, you could say to your
employer "I know a way to get this running, involving the following
steps and taking thus-and-so-much time."

     - Kick the can down the road, and stay with Java 7 for now. A
significant risk of this approach is that "for now" may slowly morph
into "forever," and since Java 7 is already in its declining years the
eventual reckoning will come sooner rather than later. But maybe by
that time you'll have moved on, and it'll be your successor's successor
who posts here saying "When I upgrade from Java 7 to Java 10 ..." ;-)

Maybe the application uses Java JavaScripting at some place:
