$50.00 an hour?

Are you taking the piss

I'll do it for $150.00 an hour, 6 weeks paid holiday a year, company
car, luxury apartment and a couple of chicks not over 22 (apologies to
Ry Cooder)

In my town $50 an hour is good, or used to be. I'm not sure how much that is these days if you have to buy your own health insurance. I'm not sure what the cost of living is like in Jersey City, but it does sound rather low for the qualifications they're listing.

Good compared to the town is different than good compared to the job
market. $150 is on the very-high high end for a Java developer though,
being $312k/yr You're more likely to get $50-$100 + benefits, depending
on the level of experience and contribution expected.

Assuming 40hr/week, $50/hr is equivalent to $104k/yr, which is what I
would offer a senior/lead level engineer. Eg someone who can take high
level requirements, work out a design that fits it all together.
Someone who can work directly with customers and product designers to
ensure the problems being solved are the right ones to solve, and they
are solved the right way.

For $150/hr, I would expect someone who doesn't actually touch code at
all, but instead knows the CEO of the company, and doesn't actually do
any work. Unless of course they're a lawyer, in which case that's a
discounted rate by far ;-)

Rates depends a lot on the location. NJ is in the high end in US
but not at the very top.

It also depends on whether it is perm or c2c. This rate was
for c2c. c2c should be maybe 40% higher than perm due to
all the extra cost that need to be covered. So 50/hour c2c
is only equivalent to maybe 72K salary.
