I have an attraction to innovative forms of GUIs. While the myriad of controls provided off the shelf oftentimes suffice, in the other times one is left saying: "Gee, I wish this control had such and such little widget here that allowed the user to do this and that". My only experience is with C#/WPF and C++ and it is a royal PITA! Programmers are hard and expensive to find. Sometimes, ones lucks out and find the precise jewel one needs on the Internet. Alas, the original author is nowhere to be found, if you have a question. TIA, -RFH

I forgot that part: Swing. Both easy and common are a bit subjective. I would say that: * High level components (classes that extends JPanel and contains a numver of JLabel, JTextField etc. to provide some high level functionality) are both easy and common * Low level components (classes that extends JPanel and override paint that does various draw and fill operations to provide a non-standard appearance) are somewhere between easy and difficult but still common Arne

Doing this and that is simplicity itself in Java (for suitable
values of "this and that").
Perhaps you'd get more useful answers if you offered a more
useful description ... What sort of a control do you have in mind?

Please see attached screenshot. My application uses 2 parts:
(1) A slider which causes a values ("threshold") to change dynamically.
(2) A textbox where the actual value resides.
I would like to create a unified/combined control which contains the
value in the middle. The little handle would have to be split into a
top handle and a bottom handle so it does not obscure the number.

Are you looking for one particular control or a whole package of controls? Do you know what controls you want, do you have a list? Some things are relatively easy, for example extending a JButton to change it's border when it gets focus. Some things are much more complicated, for example extending JTable...there are a ton of things you can do to customize a JTable. I wrote my own API to add every custom method I could think of as needed, to replace one control at a time in our application which uses other Java based software. I'm not sure what you mean in saying programmers are hard and expensive to find but you've written custom controls before in a C language. Are you looking to write a simple or complex application yourself or have someone write something for you? Is this for a business or personal use?
