Jeez, I thought maybe I was thinking outside the box, really I had no
idea. Nothing new under the sun eh.

More likely to be AI than brain-computer interface I reckon, and 2030
doesn't sem that far away, all it needs is one breakthrough in
self-modifying algorithms.

Welcome my friend, welcome to the machine ...

The idea has been around in popular culture a lot longer than you might
think, and in both mechanical and biological forms: fiction followed
close on von Neuman's heels. If you read SF, try:

Arthur C Clarke: Dial F for Frankenstein (electronic, 1963)
Greg Bear: Blood Music (biological, 1985)

Clarke's piece is a short story included in "The Wind From The Sun"
collection, Bear's is a novel. Both are worth reading.

Considering that the singularity has been the plot of countless novels,
movies and TV show episodes, you are very much inside the box. Possibly a
blue one that's bigger on the inside.

Well possibly but isn't most of what you may presume to be intelligent
self modifying software driven entities (ISMSDE) actually the result of
one of the following

Malfunction (HAL from the film 2001)

Software rewrite by superior race (VGER from the first Star Trek movie)

Result of over enthuiastic developers (SkyNet from Terminator series)

The only film I could find that explicitly references an ISMSDE is
Virtuosity (SID 6.7)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114857/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Still, I'm sure there are others.

I'll just scuttle back to my tardis now :-)
