I need to write a web application and that application needs to have a table of rows and columns. The user would select a row from that column and a mouse click event would be used to handle the row selection logic.

I also need to be able to update that table Asynchronously.

I've done java development for command line utilities and I've gone GUI development for desktop application in C/C++/VB etc, but I've never written a java application that requires a web interface.

I've written javascript ... to handle client side events....

I'm missing a piece of a puzzle here. I don't think I want to learn flash.

What piece am I missing?

Java EE and server side Java.

Very big topic.

First you need to read a lot.

Then you need to pick a framework.

Obvious possibilities:
* JSF
* handwritten JS and JAX-RS services
* GWT and JAX-RS services

But there are plenty of other.

Arne

Where do we start?

For a quick start get hold of a recent Tomcat servlet container see
http://tomcat.apache.org/

For example
Download Tomcat 7
http://tomcat.apache.org/download-70.cgi

Read the docs
http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-7.0-doc/index.html

Particularly the First Webapp stuff
http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-7.0-doc/appdev/index.html

Deploy the example web app mentioned
Then take it to bits
look at web.xml, maybe add a simple servlet and a jsp.

Then try and get a simple (javascript) script working
read about AJAX (Asynchronous Javascript and And XML)

Get your head around the SDK w3c DOM libraries

With a servlet container, an understanding of Javascript and some
experience writing servlets and jsps you should be able to get started.

It's a non-trivial exercise quite frankly.

There are a whole bunch of frameworks out there. Me, I roll my own, I
don't use frameworks as in the end you spend too much time learning the
framework, and there's always another one coming along. Do It Yourself,
understand how it works then if you have to you can pick up any
framework with the minimum of effort.

Good luck and ask questions here if you get stuck
