Isn't that a little harsh for just posting a non-English message to an
English language newsgroup?

Not for that sort of spam. It wasn't about Java, nor programming
in general - unless you consider fiction about practical exploration
of human genetics helpful for understanding genetic algorithms.

How would you know that, without being able to read the message?

Why do you think I {c,w,sh}ould be unable to read the message?

Because it isn't ... ahh, fuck it. If it's not obvious why, no amount of
explaining is likely to help you.

It seems like when someone with a German name starts talking with
confidence about the content of a German post, it doesn't need aditional
explanation of "how he would know that". But I guess if it's not obvious
how, no amount of explaining is likely to help you ;-)

I have no idea what language the post is in, other than that it's clearly
not English or I'd be able to understand it. Likewise I have no idea what
nationality anyone is, and as I am not a Republican I do not make
assumptions about such things either.

The post was in German. And Volker Borchert is a German sounding name.

It fine that you don't know that - knowledge of German is not something
that can be expected by all readers in cljp.

But if you don't understand a topic, then there is really not much
point in participating in the discussion whether it is appropriate
or not.

Actually you did make an assumption. You assumed Volker could
not read the message.

....and he seems not to have heard of Babelfish, Google Translate or The
Translation Guide, http://www.translation-guide.com/

The Translation Guide also has links to a range of language recognisers,
should you not know what language you're looking at. The Xerox recogniser
had no problem at all in deciding that the text was German.

That's different. That's the *default* assumption with a language A
message in a language B newsgroup when A != B.
