What's with this thread necromancy tactic of yours? You did that during the Great SWT Flamewar too, as I recall -- sometimes you'd just dredge up a thread that had been inactive for weeks and post random new flame-responses into it. If it's supposed to be some sort of diversionary tactic to induce me to miss noticing something else in some other thread, though, it's doomed to failure, just like any other attack upon me.

If someone does not, how does he find out? (Since you will not

There are several such articles. And mostly I agree with them. But you should realize what they are really saying. They are not saying that "Swing were doing great for Java applets and Java desktop apps, but now the change from Swing to JavaFX will make it go bad". They are saying that "Swing was doing poorly because neither Java applets nor Java desktop apps were popular and the change from Swing to JavaFX will not change that". > Could it be that JavaFX will be damaging Java? > It surely already has damaged Swing! Java applets and Java desktop apps has been a very very small part of Java world (maybe 1-2%) and the fact that JavaFX will do as poorly as Swing when it comes to market share will not have any impact on the success of Java. HTML5, CSS3, and Javascript is the GUI. Applets OTOH provided real infrastructure on the client, without touching the GUI, that still enhanced the user experience with functionality that is not available (easily) elsewhere. (Eg: single sign-on, connection-oriented server communication) Java IS the new COBOL! Serving up RESTful JSON is the best you can hope for from now on.

Perhaps it's the terminology. You say it won't "compile" and applet, but it will "translate" an applet. When I said compile, I meant compile where the target "machine code" was javascript. That's the same a translate, right? What I want to know is that if I go to the trouble of climbing the GWT learning curve, will I just have to issue a command and end up with some javascript that will do what the applet does without needing the java plugin. Or, will I have to re-code a lot of the java code even if I am using the GWT?

Yes. GWT does compile/translate to JavaScript. But it does not compile/translate applets. It compiles/translates Java code written in its own GUI framework. > What I want to know is that if I go to the trouble of climbing the GWT learning curve, will I just have to issue a command and end up with some javascript that will do what the applet does without needing the java plugin. Let me post a small example:
package test.client;
import com.google.gwt.core.client.EntryPoint;
import com.google.gwt.event.dom.client.ClickEvent;
import com.google.gwt.event.dom.client.ClickHandler;
import com.google.gwt.user.client.ui.Button;
import com.google.gwt.user.client.ui.FlowPanel;
import com.google.gwt.user.client.ui.Grid;
import com.google.gwt.user.client.ui.InlineLabel;
import com.google.gwt.user.client.ui.RootPanel;
import com.google.gwt.user.client.ui.ScrollPanel;
import com.google.gwt.user.client.ui.TabPanel;
import com.google.gwt.user.client.ui.RichTextArea;
import com.google.gwt.user.client.ui.TextBox;
public class Page implements EntryPoint {
public void onModuleLoad() {
final TextBox tb1 = new TextBox();
final TextBox tb2 = new TextBox();
final TextBox tb3 = new TextBox();
final Button addbtn = new Button("Add");
addbtn.addClickHandler(new ClickHandler() {
public void onClick(ClickEvent event) {
int v1 = Integer.parseInt(tb1.getText());
int v2 = Integer.parseInt(tb2.getText());
int v3 = v1 + v2;
tb3.setText(Integer.toString(v3));
}
});
final Grid addgrd = new Grid(4, 2);
addgrd.setWidget(0, 0, new InlineLabel("First number: "));
addgrd.setWidget(0, 1, tb1);
addgrd.setWidget(1, 0, new InlineLabel("Second number: "));
addgrd.setWidget(1, 1, tb2);
addgrd.setWidget(2, 0, new InlineLabel("Result number: "));
addgrd.setWidget(2, 1, tb3);
addgrd.setWidget(3, 0, addbtn);
final RichTextArea rta = new RichTextArea();
final Button bldbtn = new Button("B");
bldbtn.addClickHandler(new ClickHandler() {
public void onClick(ClickEvent event) {
rta.getFormatter().toggleBold();
}
});
final Button itbtn = new Button("I");
itbtn.addClickHandler(new ClickHandler() {
public void onClick(ClickEvent event) {
rta.getFormatter().toggleItalic();
}
});
final FlowPanel flowp = new FlowPanel();
flowp.add(new ScrollPanel(rta));
flowp.add(bldbtn);
flowp.add(itbtn);
final TabPanel tabp = new TabPanel();
tabp.add(addgrd, "Add");
tabp.add(flowp, "Edit");
tabp.selectTab(0);
RootPanel.get("content").add(tabp);
}
}
Conceptually that is very close to a Swing app.

Thanks! I think I finally get the idea. I'd have import gwt packages. I guess I might have to change some methods for the GUI. (Some of the GUI uses an early deprecated Java event model.) I also use string and math packages in the applet. Not much else. I don't use cookies, files, communications Looks similar to porting code from one operating system to another. I have not written Java in a while. I learned Java before 2000 and passed the Java certification test and taught an intro course a while as a community college and created poologic.com. But I have not had to done much maintenance on my website since around 2000. I learned Java and C++ as backup to my legacy skills in case I had to find a new job, but I never had to change jobs, my day job is still maintaining legacy systems.

It require few modification, the java code required none. I did not put many hours in, I am just working on for short periods. The UI is going to take more work since the classes are not exactly the same. Thanks again!

I could set down and hand-translate it myself to javascript with pretty much the same look and feel and the same functionality. Does GWT not do that? Does it do a partial job?

Even then it was clear that Applets had no future and I switched to a pure JS solution as soon as XMLHttpRequest became a viable alternative. It is hard for me to understand why anyone would have invested in them over the last ten years or even just neglected to replace them. If you are just maintaining/updating some stuff 3 could be a good approach but I have little experience there. If you have any future ambitions with this then 2 is the only sensible option. I am not saying you have to manually do things in JS though. In many situations a server-centric Ajax approach will work fine allowing you to do (almost) everything server side (Java). But sometimes you need to go all client-centric which basically condemns you to death-by-JS :) Silvio
