Studying Swing architecture is probably a very good thing
for anyone developing a Swing app.

But I must admit that have a feeling that the road from
Swing architecture to answering the specific question may
be a bit long.

Googling swing+architecture, for me, produces the first hit:

The Question:
"Sorry, i meant BasicPanelUI doesn't have a paintComponent()"
(I guess that's a question).

Depending upon one's reading speed and comprehension,
the road seems short, narrow, and straight.

Well - the word BasicPanelUI is not mentioned on that page,
so reading speed alone will certainly not do it.

And I somewhat question whether the 3 terms:
   comprehension
   architecture
   short road
fit that well together for a Java beginner.

Not really helpful Jeff. Any question anyone can ask can be replied to by "RTFM" from jerks who don't know the answer but wish to invalidate the person asking the question.

The plural of "jerk", in this context.

I had a wait and see attitude to JavaFX, wondering if Oracle would
soon drop it as they have so many other Java extensions. You sound
confident it is here to stay. Why is it preferable to Swing?

Stefan, allow me to second Roedy's question. It's been a while since
I've dabbled in client-side UIs, and I haven't followed their evolution
much, as a consequence. Your statements are intriguing, and I would very
much like you to elaborate on them. Notably, are you really, as you seem
to, going on record to say that JavaFX is a complete alternative and
improvement to Swing and that the latter can and should just be ditched?

Swing will be supported for many many years. Considering that AWT is
still supported, then I would say probably 20 years or more.

It may not make sense to rewrite an existing Swing app to JavaFX.

But I find it very hard to see why a new GUI app should be written
in Swing - for that JavaFX is the obvious choice.

Unless you want it to work in Java 7 without external dependencies.
Or you want native L&F.
Or you want accessibility.
Or i18n via ResourceBundle.
Or proper keyboard focus handling.
Or...

New apps should not be written for a Java version where the common
implementation goes out of support in April 2015.

Swing's native L&F were never really true native L&F.

It is scheduled for 8u40 according to:

https://bugs.openjdk.java.net/browse/JDK-8043344

No guarantee that it will make it.

As far as I know then JavaFX has fine support for resource bundles.

"proper" is rather subjective.

Welcome to the real world, where people are still depolying Java 5 in a
lot of different places.

A "no true Scotsman" argument doesn't help your case here.

OK, amend that to "you want accessibility *now*".

That makes my point for me. Swing has accessibility support now and it's
not going anywhere.

I don't see how, since I don't see how FXML could interact meaningfully
with the ResourceBundle class. An external representation of the UI in
some non-Java file is going to either have hardcoded label texts (no
i18n) or need its own parallel, reinvented-square-wheel way of making
those able to depend on locale.

And Java i18n can make other things depend on locale. Icons. Field widths
(because 姓名 is shorter than "Arne Vajhøj" is shorter than "Abū Kāmil,
Shujāʿ ibn Aslam ibn Muḥammad Ibn Shujāʿ"). Layouts. Parameters (left-to-
right vs. right-to-left). Even behavior (different ActionEvent handlers.
If a particular mistake is common in a certain part of the world, can add
an "are you sure?" for something that doesn't pop up in locales where
most people won't need it. Scrollbar can be added for FR to a big popup
message that won't all fit on typical screens at once in French, but will
in Chinese. And so on.)

Dialog appears, tab tab tab type enter works is proper. Dialog appears,
you have to click before any keyboard input works is not proper. We can
debate what the tab order should be after JavaFX has gotten the basics
right. :)

I know of a project that only added support for Java 5 syntax about
three or four years ago.
