Tools for IT pro's are often done in Java if either it is a
tool within the Java world or easy (read: cheap) port to other
platforms is desired. Eclipse meets both criteria. DB2 management
tools are another example.

But among the widely used consumer applications (web browsers,
email clients, office package, drawing programs,
games etc.) then Java UI is somewhat rare (even though
a few examples can be found).

The fact that JavaFX will not take over the desktop market, does
not make a newer and more modern GUI technology a stupid idea. One
just needs to adjust expectations.

I disagree. Since Java's future does not lie on the desktop I think
introducing JavaFX was merely disruptive. OTOH, Sun came up with it when
Flash and Silverlight made it look like a good idea. It should have been
ditched as soon as it became apparent that they too did not have a future.

For what is or has already been done with Java on the desktop Swing was
and is more than adequate. Now FX is just throwing people off and
pushing them in the wrong direction when they start new projects.

I do not agree with the idea that Java should not evolve outside
the area where its future lies (read: make the money).

Sure 99% or 95% (depending on whether you count Android as Java or not)
of Java development are within the server segment (usually Java EE).

But developers learning Java does not start learning Java EE. They start
making Java SE applications.

If they see the Java desktop GUI technology as being 10-15 years
outdated, then Java get the reputation of being outdated - also
known as "the new Cobol".

If SUN 6-7 years ago had been able to look into the future and seen
that RIA would be surpassed by "HTML5" and Android would become
the mobile device standard, then maybe they should just have
given Swing a major facelift instead of starting JavaFX.

Developers is also a limited resource within the Java SE team.

But SUN and everybody else could not see into the future. Adobe
invested in Flex. MS invested in Silverlight. And SUN/Oracle invested
in JavaFX.

Now we are where we are. And I think Java developers should be happy
that they got JavaFX. It is a a very nice framework. It will give
developers learning Java something modern that will not make them
think of Cobol. Those in the niche that actually do write Java desktop
apps get a new much better tool.

I definitely consider going JavaFX to be the right direction, *if* you
need to do a desktop app in Java.

And what people are telling you is that is a huge IF!

What I say is that Applets still augment and bring incredible
functionality to the only statistically significant GUI and that is HTML
CSS and Javascript.

Yes - as explained in several other posts, then Java desktop
apps is not a big market.

But I like a good framework no matter whether it is a big or
a small market. And I can certainly not see a reason to stick to
the old framework when a new and better show up.

And as I also explained - besides the market the GUI framework
also impacts the perception of Java.

Why not Google it. There are several terms abbreviated RIA but only
one that are relevant for Java GUI frameworks.

You will be way better of by learning to Google such stuff instead of
asking for it.

But if you insist: Rich Internet Application.

How patronizing of you.

Once again, let me rattle off the reasons why you're wrong:

1. Google isn't a mind-reader. There are probably lots of things called
   "RIA".

2. Why should I have to go to extra effort to understand a post, instead
of the author going to extra effort to be easily understood?

3. Duplication of effort: the writer saves a few keystrokes and maybe ten
seconds of his time. Meanwhile everyone else loses whole minutes, to
either asking for clarification and waiting for a response or starting
a browser, waiting ages for it to appear and become fully responsive,
doing a search, and then trying to interpret the results to come up
with a best guess as to what might have been meant.

4. At the end of which, each reader has exactly that: a guess. While the
poster knows FOR SURE what was meant and so would everyone else if he
   just said so.

5. The author will be way better OFF learning to express himself for
   maximum understandability, NOT maximum conciseness.

> But if you insist: Rich Internet Application.

Until there is a problem. Then, things get messy.

Read a newspaper. If it is anything like the ones I read,
abbreviations will quite often be spelled out the first time if there

What is that? Google gave me something that might be it (Rich
Internet Applications). I have never seen the term before, and I do
not know that that is it. Even if I guessed right, I do not know that
I did get it right.

It is not surprising and certainly not uncommon that Java people do not

For what it's worth, when I tried a Google search on "RIA" I didn't
get this meaning in the first couple of screenfuls' worth of hits.
It popped right up, though, when I added "Java" as a second screen
term. Do you get a different result? So, much as I hate to agree
with anything said by The Poster Of Many Names, I think he might have
a point in this case.

Well, there you go, then.

A lot of people keep claiming that Google can answer questions like
these. It can't. The most it can do is turn it into a multiple-choice
quiz ... one whose correct answer may well be "none of the above".

You do not have a point and you don't have a clue either. If you intend
to take part in discussions here you should make sure you read up on
contemporary topics. You can not expect everyone to spell out what IDE,
RDBMS, ORM and ROTFLMAO means just because some clueless visitor might
not be familiar with common acronyms.

OTOH (on the other hand, if you will) many Java programmers tend to be
late to games so perhaps we should be a little more explicit in this NG
(Newsgroup).

None of the nasty things that you have said or implied about me are at
all true.

Common acronyms are not at issue here (indeed, I know what all of the
ones you listed are). Rather, it is obscure abbreviations that are at
issue, i.e., ones that are *not* widely recognized.

None of the nasty things that you have said or implied about me are at
all true.

RIA is extremely widely recognized.

It is used in IT magazines, blogs, vendor technical articles etc. - all
over the web.

Developers with an interest in web technology should know such a term.
