You mean, Google can read minds now? So I can query it for "what
particular thing Silvio was thinking about when he wrote 'IoT' in
<53ba6e3e$0$2967$e4fe514c@news.xs4all.nl>, of all the many dozens of
things that could be abbreviated to that"?

Cool. ;)

Oh, wait, Google participates in PRISM so won't the NSA have access to
this new capability as well?

Then we're all hosed. :(

No - it would tell you what the common meaning is - and then you would
assume that was what he meant.

But "IoT" doesn't have a "common meaning"; if it did, I would have known
what it meant already. It had only esoteric jargon meanings, and there'd
be no way for me to know which (if any) was the one Silvio meant.

I just googled "IoT". The top results were:
3 ads about "Internet of Things"
Wikipedia entry for "Internet of Things"
Wikipedia entry for IOT [disambiguation page, listing "Inductive output
tube", "In-Out-Through", "inter-operator tariff, "Internet of Things",
"Interoperability testing", "Input-Output Transfer", "Index-Organized
Table", "Illuminates of Thanateros", and "British Indian Ocean Territory"]
News article about Intel creating an IoT group with tech leaders
... and several more pages about Internet of Things."

Given all of that information and the original context of his post, one
could reasonably assume that the most logical answer was Illuminates of
Thanateros... I mean Internet of Things. :-)

I'll be fair, I didn't immediately connect "IoT" with "Internet of
Things." It took me a few seconds before coming up with a potential
acronym; even if I hadn't, Google seems to indicate that "Internet of
Things" is by far the most important expansion of that acronym, so much
so that I would call it a "common meaning"--even if it's a common
meaning that doesn't extend beyond the people who are likely to use it
(think something like HTTP or TCP).

Well, there you go, then. *Nine* different things Silvio could have
meant, about half of which might tangentially touch upon this newsgroup's
topic.

It does.

If you used Google then you would have seen that all the top
hits had the same meaning.

You may also have noted that everybody else here besides you
seemed to have understood it.

That is not a good criteria for "common meaning".

That nobody else chimed in with "me, too!" posts after I asked my
question does not prove that everybody else understood it. It only proves
that the ones that didn't had sufficient netiquette not to waste
bandwidth on posts that wouldn't add anything new to the discussion.
Unlike you, who have made several separate posts whose sole purpose seems
to be to falsely accuse me of dishonesty.
