#28770 — Java 8 and Windows XP?

Anybody had a problem installing Java 8 on WinXP? I tried today to
install and got a message about a missing entry point and Windows DLL.

7 installs fine but I was hoping to get everybody up to 8. The code
doesn't use any features of 8 so I just compiled with 8 and used target
and source 7. That should work shouldn't it?

Thanks,

Quoth Wikipedia: "Java 8 is not supported on Windows XP. But as of
JDK 8 update 5, it still can run under Windows XP after forced
installation by directly unzipping from the installation executable."

(If this procedure gives you "a message," please be sure to
tell us you received "a message." Helps with diagnosis, y'know. ;)

If you're compiling against 7's rt.jar and stuff, I think it
should work. But if you're using 8's class libraries (even if you
don't make explicit use of their new features) you may be out of
luck trying to use the compiled .class files with 7.

Stupid Windows, you can't copy from their error dialogs and I my CRS is
getting pretty bad these days. And I couldn't go back and try it again
to get the message because they needed to bring their system up.

Seems to run on the client's computer fine but I'm going to have to
install the Java 7 JDK again so I can get at that rt.jar.

     I'd half-expect that a JDK8-compiled class file might contain
references to interfaces and so on that didn't exist in 7. But
perhaps (1) you're lucky, or (2) Oracle used more care than I'd
given them credit for.

Safest course: If you're going to execute with Java N, compile
with JDK <=N.

Java 8 most definitely does not support Windows XP and trying to get it to
work would be way more trouble than it's worth in my opinion.

XP is now 13 years old. Time to move on perhaps?

My client will have XP for the foreseeable future, unfortunately. They
can still get support from MS but it is going to get more and more
difficult to service them.

They've been talking a major upgrade for some time but that involves a
lot of new hardware and construction. The last I heard was maybe by the
end of the year. I'll have lots of work if they pull the trigger but
till then it's XP :-).

Keep everything updated to supported versions or combination of versions
is always a valid strategy. If the system in question
is exposed to security risks the recommendation should be latest
supported versions or combination of versions.

An often seen strategy is to keep a working system as is. If it
ain't broke don't fix it. Ignore that certain software versions are
no longer supported. Obviously this strategy is not good if the
system in question is exposed to security risks.

But what you are proposing:
* keep existing unsupported version of some software
* update other software to latest and greatest
* resulting in an unsupported and most likely very rare
   software combination
is a very risky strategy in my opinion. You can get all types
of problems.

Target does not stop you from using new 1.8 methods. To be fully sure
you must compile with the 1.7 libraries or with the 1.7 JDK.
