But why crawl all over the Ford concept cars withous so much as a nod at
the GM Firebirds of the late 50s? Unlike some of the others, these made
it onto the road, still exist and may be still roadable. All had jet
turbines for motive power. The Firebirds III and IV used a control stick
instead of steering wheel and pedals: I've always wondered what they were
like to drive.

:) Being a Ford man, I didn't note the omission. '62 Fairlane 4-door was
my first car.

Same here, really. I've certainly had more Fords than anything else,
though all have been Euro Ford (Sierra, Escort III RS Turbo, and now a
Focus), interspersed with assorted Fiat, Vauxhall and a long wheel base
Landrover Series 2b

Yes, I thought so. There is quite a bit of stuff out on the net about the
Fireballs 1 and 3. The other car I'd like to see is the Rover Jet-1. It
was built in 1950, so is the world's first jet-powered road car: the
Firebird 1 appeared in 1953.

And, do you know about the Rover-BRM, which ran at Le Mans in 1963 and
1965. I didn't. Its quite a beast, still exists and is being restored to
a roadworthy state. Here's a road test. Well worth a read.....
