Hi All.
What is a good browser for Usernet??. I am still using Windows XP and find the Google access limiting.

With Google I do not get a good appreciation of the group hierarchy along with a navigational tool.

The best newsreader I've used with Windows is Forte Agent. There used to
be a reduced function (no kill file) version and a paid-for version. Now
there's just to one paid-for version (for a whole $29) with a 30 day free
trial period.

You'll also need to choose a server to read news from. I see that Forte
now offer a paid-for service which I've never tried. A lot of us use
Eternal September

I think you'll find a newsreader is faster as well as nicer to use than
Google's web browser interface. Just as Google Groups works rather like a
web forum, a newsreader works in much the same way as an e-mail reader.

This is completely OT here.

I use Thunderbird.

Hi All.
I did eventually get around to installing Thunderbird (with my Mozilla Firefox) and connecting to the Eternal-September server (after creating an account).

The version of Thunderbird is 38.5.0. It seems to download large chunks of whatever I subscribe to.

Is there any way I can filter this information with a selection before download ??
Is there any way I can filter the already downloaded information with a filter that refers to the contents within the articles ??

I think I stand to be dis-appointed with Thunderbird when I can do such filtering with Goggle user groups (wrt filtering over a whole user group based on what is contained within).

Regards JC.....

When you first subscribe to a newsgroup, you haven't yet read any
of its postings (as far as Thunderbird knows). If it's a low-traffic
newsgroup with few messages Thunderbird just loads them, but if there
are a lot of unread messages it asks you how many you want and then
downloads the most recent N of them for whatever N you choose.

Thereafter, Thunderbird just downloads new messages; it doesn't
re-download messages you've already seen.

> Is there any way I can filter this information with a selection before download ??

I'm not 100% sure. You can certainly set up filters, but I don't
know how much of the traffic Thunderbird actually needs to download
before it can apply them.

> Is there any way I can filter the already downloaded information with a filter that refers to the contents within the articles ??

Sure: Just set up the filters and run them.

Oh, yeah, agree totally. Thunderbird is an utterly useless piece
of crap, and Australians are all congenital idiots who are prone to
making hasty judgements. ;-)

It's "Usenet", not "Usenet". Perhaps your online search will be more effective with the correct search term.

Typo because autocorrect fixed your typo: Not "Usernet".

Unlikely - Google also auto-corrects the search.
