You started with the WTF wording which hardly qualifies as a request to
rephrase. Never heard of Google?

That really says more about you than anyone else, as the answer to your
question here is the first result on Google, so if you actually wanted to
know instead of bickering, you easily could by now.

Non sequitur. It does not alter the declarative content of the question,
so it can't change what it's asking for.

So ... you're both knee-jerk refreshing and responding inside of 1 minute
AND nymshifting now? Interesting.

The first result for what? There's no Google-friendly query apparent to
me here, just a short (so appears incidentally in ten zillion unrelated
things) sequence of three letters.

Not that that matters. You should have just spelled out whatever it was
you meant, rather than expecting everyone else in the world to have to go
around looking stuff up just to understand what you write.

Indeed, you've spilled more electrons flailing at me and kicking up a
whiny fuss in an effort to get *out* of doing so than you'd have spilled
just bloody doing it in the first place! So you've failed to communicate
effectively to your audience (the ostensible reason for your post
mentioning "IoT"); you've failed to save time and effort (the ostensible
reason for your cryptically abbreviating whatever "IoT" stands for); in
short, you've failed. Spectacularly. Perhaps if you'd just written
whatever you were thinking without overthinking how to save a handful of
keystrokes you'd have succeeded at both things instead. And perhaps
you'll remember this lesson next time you think "Hey, I can save five or
six keystrokes here by using an abbreviation nobody knows instead of just
spelling something out!"

Nymshifting with every post now? And again, you've ended up spending
waaaay more effort on not spelling it out than you would have spent on
simply spelling it out.

Why is there apparently such great fear of actually writing out what you
meant by "IoT"?

But it does change whether something is perceived as a request for
additional information or as an attack on the poster. Something you seem
perfectly well aware of, considering you yourself cut it out when you tried
to make it look like you were just asking for more information instead of
being rude.

> So ... you're both knee-jerk refreshing and responding inside of 1 minute

Yeah, and then I travelled back in time to establish this, uh, "nymshift"
(seriously, are you 12 ?) years ahead of this discussion. That's exactly
how that went. You saw right through my deception. Good job, Sherlock. I
guess nothing gets past you.

Go to www.google.com. Enter what you are curious about, in this case,
"IoT". Press enter. Read first result. That's how easy it would have been
to get your question answered if you actually cared to get it answered and
not start a childish fight.

> Not that that matters. You should have just spelled out whatever it was

You are confusing me with Silvio, but speaking for Silvio, he likely
assumed that in a technical forum, most posters were familiar with
contemporary, topic related language. Explaining every word and term one
uses because it's possible that one of the participants of the discussion
has been living in a cave and is unable or unwilling to use Google does not
seem like a sensible use of anyones time.

It seems like out of all the participants, you are the only one who didn't
understand Silvios post, and your lack of understanding quite clearly stems
from your unwillingness to educate yourself in order to overcome your own
shortcomings.

I don't see why anyone would go through the effort of explaining something
to you when you yourself are so unwilling to put in even a minimal amount
of effort, while at the same time being rude and acting like a child. As
someone new to this forum, you have made one hell of a first impression.

If that actually works, with such a tiny query, then it's by pure
accident, since there have to be a zillion unrelated circumstances where
those three letters appear in that sequence. And that means that even had
I done so, I would have had no way of knowing which, if any, of the
results I got actually had to do with your post. Perhaps the fifth, or

I am familiar with contemporary, Java-related language, but "IoT" is not

None of the nasty things that you have said or implied about me are at

Nobody is asking you to explain every word; just to expand abbreviations
that a Java developer may not know.

I'm the first of them to post. Once I posted, the others had no reason to
ask as well as those would then just be pointless "me, too" posts. So it
will be common for there to be only one response asking a question.

*Finally*! A straight answer! Now really, was that so hard? Why not just

Purely coincidentally, if so. And it still wouldn't have helped, if so,
since I wouldn't have been able to be sure which, if any, of the things
in the first ten google hits were actually related to what Silvio was

I didn't see it before I googled, but then it seemed the most

I still don't know what its significance is here. It was mentioned in the
same breath as tablets and smart-phones. So it involves mobile devices,
one presumes. From the sounds of it these are *less* likely to support
Java, versus a desktop PC or (especially) a server.

Good(?) catch. I wasn't following this thread, but I do have my
newsreader set up to flag your posts, and checking this one and the
backstory ....

Good heavens. I had wondered from time to time what had become of The
Poster Of Many Names.

With all due respect, I don't think "first or second Google hit"
is a well-defined term these days -- as I understand things, Google
tries to customizes the order in which it presents search results
based on what it thinks you want (well, that and what it thinks
will increase its own profits).

When I try a search on "iot" the first hit is indeed the Wikipedia
page on Internet of Things. I'm not explicitly signed into Google,
but if they're keeping a history of my searches anyway, most of them
are for technical/computing information, which could be a factor.

For what it's worth, I had not come across this acronym previously but
was able to guess the intended meaning after a few seconds' thought.

Talk about blasts from the past ....

No. And who the hell is Paul? I see nobody here going by that name.

None of the nasty things that you have said or implied about me are at
all true.

Be careful. Some usenutters are paranoid enough to take our reappearances
so close together in time as "proof" that we're sockpuppets of each other.

Remarkable.

Admittedly I don't always resist the temptation to participate in
OT discussions such as this one, but anyone who reviews all of my
posting history in cljp should notice that I show up from time to
time in other discussions as well. (For example, this past winter
the group helped me figure out a problem I was having with a JList.)
For the record, for what it's worth, etc.

How so?

As do I. In fact, I *really* get around ... more than any one person that
isn't me could possibly realize.

I was active here last month as well. See if you can spot which posts
were mine. ;)

I'm only responding because it seems rude to ignore a direct question.
I'll just say that I'm fairly sure this subject was discussed some
years ago, and I doubt that anything useful or entertaining would
come of further discussion.

I was curious enough to collect all posts since the end of May,
remove the ones from posters I'm pretty sure are not you, and ....
There were still more than I really cared to read through, and my
idea of looking only at those that appeared to be posted from aioe
didn't produce a useful result.
