Back in a previous incarnation, when I first used Java, either there was
no Maven, or I never learned it. Since I am really busy getting up to
speed (re-learning Java), may I ask a quick question?

My objective is to become a proficient Sphinx programmer, and this is
the tutorial:

http://cmusphinx.sourceforge.net/wiki/tutorialsphinx4

What is Maven doing for me? Is it some sort of fancy "make"? Perhaps it
retrieves code (more generally: resources) from Carnegie Mellon? Does it
make sure to downloads the latest & greatest (like some Microsoft
facilities?).

TIA,

-Ramon

The Maven people may hate me for it, but I would still consider
it a build tool.

Maven is fundamentally a build tool.

A high level build tool.

You put your code in a directory tree in the format Maven wants
and specify what libraries in what versions are needed and then
Maven get the libraries, do the build, run unit tests, generate
documentation etc..

Hi Ramon!

Actually you do not need to use Maven to work with Sphinx-4. You can use it as an ordinary Java library. But I suspect the Sphinx-4 library uses a number of other libraries, which in turn use other libraries and so on. You can manually trace these dependencies, download required libraries and use them in your project. Or you can make your application Maven-friendly and insert lines from "Using in your projects" section in pom.xml.

Maven is a bit complex for new users. Prepare to spend a lot of time and effort if you are going to learn it.
