A system that I am learning requires the use of Maven. I decided to
start with a minimalistic "Hello, World" application.

The problem is that after several attempts the hierarchical structure
(one inside the other? one after the other?) is not clear.

See the 2 competing alternatives in the screenshots.

TIA,

-Ramon

The system in question is "Sphinx", a Speech Recognition framework, and
this is where they tell you to use Maven in your applications:

"Sphinx-4 is available as a maven package in Sonatype OSS repository.
To use sphinx4 in your maven project specify this repository in your
pom.xml: "

Did you take this sentence to mean "you must use Maven"?

You are free to use what you will for project management.

No. I took it to mean:

"This is a *very* complicated system, with lots of modules, highly
customizable, written in different programming languages, going through
its fourth major version...

... therefore, if you do not use Maven, the probability of getting in
trouble will be exponentially higher".

Downloading sphinx4-5prealpha-src.zip, extracting, running ant, ant
javadoc,
and ant run-transcriber-demo, setting up a standard Java project in Eclipse
seems pretty simple.

Indeed. I did pretty much the same (except that all I had to do was
select the "Build" menu item) with NetBeans. The output is the "Java
Sphinx Library".

All that is water under the river. You did it with Eclipse (which I have
used in the past), I did it with NB.

Now comes the fun part.

I would like to write a simple application based on that library. Get my
feet wet.

I am curious: you are not by any chance an Sphinx-interested developer,
are you?

I would give an arm and a leg to find one. A peer.

I took a short lived interest in Sphinx several years ago.
Have since found other interests.

Unfortunately, the mailing lists don't seem to support very interested

I will definitely read it, right away... and in exchange :-) you, sir
are going to take a look at the thread
