As Linux/UNIX programmer I use grep, gawk or less in preference to Perl. The exact one chosen would depend on what was needed to be done. [1] I'm unsure what a Windows user's weapons of choice would be - Perl or Visual BASIC? [1] The last job of this type I did was when I needed a list of names as 'Firstname SURNAME and was handed an Excel spreadsheet containing the names in a single column as 'SURNAME Firstname'. I first saved the spreadsheet as a CSV file and used gawk to pull out the name column, split it on spaces, swap the elements and write it to a second file. -- martin@ | Martin Gregorie gregorie. | Essex, UK org |
