It may be a good approach.
Here is another which may be good or not.

package scratch;

import java.util.HashMap;
import java.util.Map;

import javax.swing.JTabbedPane;

@SuppressWarnings("serial")
public class MyTabbedPane extends JTabbedPane {

  private Map<Integer, TabTypes> tabMap = new HashMap<>();

  public enum TabTypes {Empty, Table, Text, Unknown}

  public TabTypes getTabType(int index)
  throws IndexOutOfBoundsException {
    return tabMap.get(index);
  }

}
