Indeed, and I've never seen or attempted to use nested functions in C.
Maybe I don't delve into dark corners, but this is the first time I've 
ever heard nested function declarations mentioned in the same breath as C.

Quite. And don't use C-spells or any other too-clever-by-half tricks that 
serve more to obfuscate than to make code run faster now we've got decent 
optimising compilers.
