The other issue has been the one of non-standard standard libraries that 
contained added compiler-specific or OS-specific functions while omitting 
many of the functions you'd expect to see. The examples that spring to 
mind were MicroWare's OS-9, Borland C and NCR UNIX (which used very non-
standard network interfacing). I've never used MS C compilers but have 
always wondered whether the Borland standard library was the way it was 
to match the MS libraries.

In practise, the nonstandard functions were pretty easy to fix by writing 
a compatibility library that, e.g. provided a version of Borlands strmfe()
function for use when porting code from the Borland compiler to one of 
the unices. You needed a library for each target, so I had/have three for 
moving code between Borland, OS-9 and Linux systems. On the bright side, 
these were small libraries and quite easy to write.
 
This issue should have been fixed by the POSIX standard, but is this the 
case?
