What doesn't work about it?

If you mean contiguous structures, then no. Sadly, Java can not pack
multiple objects in a single block of memory like C/C++ can. (If you're
curious what for: Vectors, pixels, voxels, particles, neural networks,
database rows, etc. Millions or billions of identical objects packed
together for very fast access and efficient storage.)
