Consider what your code does with an input line like
"What?" she exclaimed. "It wasn't his to begin with!"
You'll get the "word" sequence
"What?"
she
exclaimed.
"It
wasn't
his
to
begin
with!"
... from which you'll obtain
What?
she
exclaimed
It
wasn't
his
to
begin
with!
