Thank you Arne, for that very helpful response. I've looked at Crimson, 
Aelfred (the GNU version), Resin, and Woodstox, which are all optionally 
validating and available under an Open Source license.

I think my current preference would be Woodstox. Woodstox is still  an 
active project, has an Apache license as opposed to GPL, requires the 
least heap according to your test, and also seems to be the fastest.
