I'm not disagreeing. The main split I wanted to emphasize is between 
traditional monolithic kernels and MACH-type message-passing microkernels 
because, apart from all its other overheads, the latter tends to 
introduce serialising overheads if something you ask it to do really 
hammers a particular kernel server type. At least that was the case with 
the DEC TrueUnix OS running on alphaservers.
