I would really like to find a good open-source Java project where I
could make a contribution. I understand that these projects usually
don't pay and I'm okay with that although a paying one would obviously
be better. I've googled on "open source java projects" and will see what
I can find there but I was hoping someone here might be able to
recommend a specific project that would let me achieve my goals.

I've been using Java, mostly on things for my own personal use, for a
while now. I have also done a one-man project using Java that worked out
well, although the applet is no longer used since the company got taken
over a while back. I have done another paying project in a small team
but that project got killed fairly early on because it was over-budget.
(I'm inclined to blame a peer for most of that but no one wants to hear
finger-pointing.) I've done another Java project for free for a local
community group but they stopped using it after the friend I did it for
left the organization. I have no formal education in Java or even IT in
general but have been working in IT for many years despite that ;-)

I would really like to be able to apply for paying Java developer
positions in the relatively near future. I think that working on an
open-source project would give me a chance to use my existing skills in
a team environment rather than as a solo effort. I would also expect to
pick up some useful skills along the way, such as using some kind of
code repository, which must be pretty much standard in most IT shops. It
would be a bonus if I had the excuse to use other important technologies
like Spring and Hibernate and some of the others that often crop up on
job ads.

I would like to be able to point to code that I've written and have
appraisals or recommendations from other developers on the project team
to increase my credibility. If a potential employer could see good solid
code, written in an environment not too different from theirs, and some
kind of recommendation from peers that acknowledged I wrote it in a
timely fashion and with good cooperation with those peers, I think I
might have a real shot at a developer job. Is that realistic? Or just
wishful thinking?

~~
Henry
