I found a work-around for that.
Instead of Timer, I used:

   ScheduledExecutorService scheduler;
...
   scheduler = Executors.newSingleThreadScheduledExecutor();
   scheduler.scheduleAtFixedRate( aRunnable, 5, 5, TimeUnit.SECONDS );
...
   // shutdown that kills both timer and thread     
   scheduler.shutdownNow();
