"Automatic programming" was a buzzword in programming in the 1950s
(long before CAD and EDA) and as a result, we got Fortran, Algol, etc.
There were later aspirations in the same direction, and we got 4GLs,
little languages, DSLs, code generators, and scripting languages. The
idea of programming in a graphical way has also come up and been
explored repeatedly, but has not caught on widely.
CAD and EDA systems are written by programmers. If the ideas from
these systems were useful for programming, one of these programmers
would have applied them to software development tools (maybe they
have, but in any case, this has not led to the kinds of systems that
is envisioned above).
Interestingly, I recently heard a talk
<http://www.complang.tuwien.ac.at/talks/Zimmermann2014_06_05> where
the presenter applied compiler construction technology to an EDA
problem (designing pumps), to deal with the problem of maintaining
consistency between different views of the design (by mechanical
engineers, electrical engineers etc.).
