Your assumption about IF was wrong.

I was able to write SYNONYM in ANS-Forth. This requires the novice-package, but the novice-package is all ANS-Forth --- there was no good reason to abandon ANS-Forth as you did (I know what your reason was: vendor lock-in).

I added some extra features. My SYNONYM takes a wid and puts the word in that word-list. Also, I have SYNONYM-FAST that is like SYNONYM but produces faster-executing code --- these words can't be used in interpretive mode however --- they can only by used in compilation mode.

This has only been tested under VFX so far:

: execute, ( -- ) \ runtime: xt --
    postpone execute ;

Bernd Payson has frequently quoted Stephen Pelc as saying: "writing portable code is an egoless discipline."

Can Stephen Pelc verify that this quote is his? Or does Stephen Pelc disagree with this quote? Will the real Stephen Pelc please stand up, please stand up...

I wrote a paper for EuroForth which may be the source of Bernd's
comment.

Since you're an expert on portability and even wrote a paper on the subject, can you explain why your SYNONYM wasn't written in ANS-Forth? --- as a member of the Forth-200x standards committee, can you tell of any purpose for a language standard other than portability of code?

The reason why I ask, is that I'm writing a paper of my own describing how my disambiguifiers defeat the sabotage in ANS-Forth to allow cross-compilers to be written by common ANS-Forth programmers (not just compiler-vendors) --- SYNONYM and ALIAS are simple examples provided in the paper to show how code that had previously been considered impossible becomes easy.

Obviously this paper won't be in EuroForth --- Anton Ertl decides what gets in EuroForth, and he is the culprit who sabotaged FIND in gForth to prevent cross-compilers from being written --- my disambiguifiers work-around his sabotage.

Stephen, Hugh set you up to criticize you over ANS-Forth, specifically
his perceived problems with it. He must've gotten bored with Ms. Rather.

Hugh, you're such a troll ...

Let your hatred of ANS go. Let it go. Use fig-Forth. Be at peace.

What purpose do your "disambiguifiers" serve other than to "fix" gForth?
Do they have any use anywhere else? I.e., my initial impression is that
they'll be very specific code used for a very specific situation.

You haven't gotten anywhere on your Forth you've been talking about for
a decade and now you've suddenly got time for "professional" level paper?
Really, Hugh? Really!? ... Do you expect *anyone* here to read it?
Who? Why?

Raise your hand if you have an interest in Hugh's "disambiguifiers"!
Personally, I think you'd do better with an in-depth paper on using
CREATE .. DOES> effectively or cross-compiling or boot-strapping a
Forth than you would with this ... Of course, something like this is
fine for a paper, if you've entered academia and need to publish
something.

Cross-compilers are, pretty much, the only way to make money in Forth. That has been my experience anyway. Micro-controllers are really where it is at.

Your interest in Forth is to prove that C is the "god language," and that Forth is a toy interpreter similar to Lua or Python except without any features --- I don't care if you and your ilk raise your hands or not --- your importance in the Forth world is below zero.

You're in this for money, right? So ... Where is yours, again?

> Micro-controllers are really where it is at.

By "it" you did mean money, yes? Or, by "at" did you mean that
micro-controllers are what you want to work with?

> Your interest in Forth is to prove that C is the "god language,"

My interest in Forth was and is just the personal accomplishment
from implementing it or simply the act of doing so. Nothing more.

Since I already know C is the "god language", why would
I need to prove that? I don't see why you keep bringing
this up except to incite others to attack.

> that Forth is a toy interpreter similar to Lua or Python except
> without any features

It may be "toy" or it may not be. It seems to be decent
as compared to other ITC interpreted Forths which are mostly
from the fig-Forth era. It clearly won't outclass a compiled
Forth, even one without optimization. It clearly isn't as
developed as other Forths in terms of both supported words
and utilities, but many fig-Forths and other free Forths
weren't all that developed either.

Although I understood the DTC, ITC, TTC, and STC concepts
from decades ago, I never implemented any of them before.
So, I did learn much about the ITC style of interpreter
which is useful for other language projects and interpreted
applications.

> I don't care if you and your ilk raise your hands or not

YAHOO! I've been re-ranked and promoted to: "ilk".
I don't recall your last classification for me, but,
IIRC, it was below ilk ...

> your importance in the Forth world is below zero.

Are you claiming your importance to the Forth world isn't
below zero also? ...

Is that your problem? I.e., you want to be as important
or as respected as Ms. Rather, Anton Ertl, or Stephen Pelc?
So, you attack them to prove your worth? ... Weird.

Seriously, I honestly don't see the respect here or the
following required for that. Have you tried a Forth forum
where no one knows of you? Here, I'll help you with a plan
of attack:

Step 1) Help the NEWBs for a year or two to build up your cachet.
Step 2) Pronounce ANS to be dead. The NEWBs won't know any better.
Step 3) Declare your Forth to be the way of the future and provide
some straw man arguments or other logical fallacies to prove it to
them. They simply can't tell the difference. You're great at this
form of misdirection. Like politics, an outrageous lie is the power
backing all great leaders.
Step 4) Convince your minions to go forth and spread the new prophecy.
Step 5) Once the outside world partakes, claim your vindication.

Wait. Did I mix that up?

I'm not entirely sure (feigned), but those might just be the
directions for building a cult or resurrecting Nazism ...

I have been in private contact with Hugh regarding his project,
and it looks really promising (at least through a n00b's eyes).
I am not at liberty to discuss it, but I thought that I would
  share just that small tidbit.

I don't know why he wastes so much time and energy insulting and
arguing with others, though. IMHO, he has a rare talent, and
could use that time and energy more constructively. My feeble
attempts to get him to modify his behavior were unsuccessful,
so I have chosen to try to ignore his flaws, because he has so
much else to offer. I do not intend to join any cults led by
him or anyone else, but I _will_ continue to read anything he
posts, keep what I consider to be valuable, and discard the
rest. My "keep" pile is still taller than my "discard" pile,
  at least for Hugh.

Share what exactly? That Hugh has a cunning plan?

If you could increase the sizes of you piles by getting Hugh to email you
directly rather than him posting here, that would be great.

Please forgive me for declining your invitation. It's been a
long day, and I learned my lesson earlier (in a different

That was Rod's deal. I was replying to him, against my better

I fear that you are asking something of me that is beyond my
capabilities. I must decline once again, with apologies.

Rod is not entirely a bad person, but he is not anyone to worry about.
In fact, no one here is anyone to worry about. We will all have our own
opinions about Hugh and everything else. If you don't like what some
say here, then it is best to not read it. This group as much as any, is
full of people who will not be much swayed by anything you write.

I don't mind reading some of Hugh's posts. But far too often he goes
off the deep end and has to relate Forth to the mind controlling Ms
Rather or any of the many flunkies running the Forth world through the
ANS committee. He really can seem like someone off his meds.

A man is driving down the road and his car breaks down near a monastery.
He goes to the monastery, knocks on the door, and says, "My car broke
down. Do you think I could stay the night?" The monks graciously accept
him, feed him dinner, even fix his car. As the man tries to fall asleep,
he hears a strange sound. A sound unlike anything he's ever heard before.
The Sirens that nearly seduced Odysseus into crashing his ship comes to
his mind. He doesn't sleep that night. He tosses and turns trying to
figure out what could possibly be making such a seductive sound. The next
morning, he asks the monks what the sound was, but they say, "We can't
tell you. You're not a monk." Distraught, the man is forced to leave.

Years later, after never being able to forget that sound, the man goes
back to the monastery and pleads for the answer again. The monks reply,
"We can't tell you. You're not a monk." The man says, "If the only way I
can find out what is making that beautiful sound is to become a monk,
then please, make me a monk." The monks reply, "You must travel the earth
and tell us how many blades of grass there are and the exact number of
grains of sand. When you find these answers, you will have become a
monk."

The man sets about his task. After years of searching he returns as a
gray-haired old man and knocks on the door of the monastery. A monk
answers. He is taken before a gathering of all the monks. "In my quest to
find what makes that beautiful sound, I traveled the earth and have found
what you asked for: By design, the world is in a state of perpetual
change. Only God knows what you ask. All a man can know is himself, and
only then if he is honest and reflective and willing to strip away self
deception."

The monks reply, "Congratulations. You have become a monk. We shall now
show you the way to the mystery of the sacred sound." The monks lead the
man to a wooden door, where the head monk says, "The sound is beyond that
door." The monks give him the key, and he opens the door. Behind the
wooden door is another door made of stone. The man is given the key to
the stone door and he opens it, only to find a door made of ruby. And so
it went that he needed keys to doors of emerald, pearl and diamond.
Finally, they come to a door made of solid gold. The sound has become
very clear and definite. The monks say, "This is the last key to the last
door."

The man is apprehensive; his life's wish is behind that door! With
trembling hands, he unlocks the door, turns the knob, and slowly pushes
the door open. Falling to his knees, he is utterly amazed to discover the
source of that haunting and seductive sound...

But, of course, I can't tell you what it is because you're not a monk.

Your statement is completely incorrect. You have easily earned my
respect in the short time I've been here. You haven't yet earned
my admiration, but I promise not to be deeply disappointed if it
is discovered that either (or both) are of little value to you.

It's a common mistake to think that it is possible to have an individual
conversation on Usenet (or any broadcast message medium).

I don't know that many here would disagree with what you wrote. Hugh is
obviously talented. But he is borderline... well, something. He spends
far too much energy dissing people and is downright obsessed with Ms.
Rather.

I think that some of his talent comes from being obsessed with getting
it "right" in his own mind which is also one of his problems. While he
is clearly intelligent, his obsessiveness pushes him to deal with
non-issues that others can easily work around.

At least that is my take on him from reading the things he posts here.
It scares me a little because I think I am not entirely unlike that
myself, just not nearly as bad.

Anton Ertl is attacking the Forth community by demanding that they stop using FIND. He doesn't have the authority to do this. He is just bullying people with the pseudo-authority of being the Forth-200x chair-person, which is an appointed position.

Only FIND is sabotaged in ANS-Forth, but POSTPONE is not sabotaged (it is illegal to FIND words like IF etc., but it is legal to POSTPONE these words). My disambiguifiers work-around the sabotage by putting a POSTPONE of each word in an immediate function. This is legal because POSTPONE wasn't sabotaged to special-case these words. FIND was sabotaged to special-case these words, but it doesn't notice that it has a taboo word because the taboo word is hidden inside of the word that it is finding.

Stephen Pelc is quietly allowing Anton Ertl to make the preposterous statement that it is both legal and worthwhile for ANS-Forth to have dozens of taboo words that FIND or COMPILE, special-case, although this is a clear betrayal of Charles Moore's idea that Forth should not have syntax. Stephen Pelc could put my disambiguifiers in VFX (among other things, he could get rid of that goofy VFX-specific SYNONYM and replace it with ANS-Forth code). Stephen Pelc won't stand up to Anton Ertl though, because Leon Wagner would kick him off the Forth-200x committee --- and MPE won't get any more lucrative "joint projects" with Forth Inc..

Michael: you are an auto-mechanic. Imagine that Anton Ertl showed up at your shop and told you that you can't use a torque-wrench anymore. He explains that he is the chair-person of the Mechanic-200x committee, and he decides what is standard and what is non-standard. If you continue to use a torque-wrench, you will be non-standard and you won't be allowed to call yourself a mechanic anymore. You point out that torque-wrenches have been standard for decades. Also, Stephen Pelc in a shop across the street uses a torque-wrench. Anton Ertl explains that Stephen Pelc is a member of the Mechanic-200x committee, so he is allowed to use a torque-wrench, but yet the Mechanic-200x committee has voted that torque-wrenches are illegal for plebian mechanics such as yourself. At this time, enthusiastic supporters of Mechanic-200x get on the internet and say that a torque-wrench is not necessary; they do mechanical work all the time (simple stuff like replacing brake-pads, replacing a water-pump, etc.) without a torque-wrench. None of them have ever installed the engine-head, but they speculate that this is easy to do using ordinary wrenches, and that this must be how Stephen Pelc does it. Also at this time, a mechanic named Hugh gets on the internet and tells mechanics to continue to use torque-wrenches, but to hide them under "disambiguifiers" so Anton Ertl and his minions can't find them when they do their frequent inspections. He suggests doing your work replacing the engine-head late at night using the torque-wrench when nobody is watching and then claim later that you did it with an ordinary wrench. After this, Alex McDonald flames Hugh relentlessly on the internet, saying that he has a "serious misunderstanding of how wrenches work" and that he is a non-standard mechanic (effectively, not a mechanic at all). Rod Pemberton encourages Hugh to go back to the FIG-Mechanic standard, which was used in the days of the Model-T when the torque-wrench was still considered standard.

This is pretty much what is happening with Forth-200x --- just replace "torque-wrench" with FIND and replace "remove and reinstall the engine-head" with "write a cross-compiler" --- there you have it!
