Well, there are lot of "ifs" there. First of all: wouldn't it be cheaper if we simply map all the killer asteroids and comets, so that we have a 30 years warning period before they will impact? It is pretty obvious that reaching such a comet takes 10 years if you have a reasonable budget (see Rosetta). Landing on it is a piece of cake, as long as we have enough RTX2010s left ;-). Vaporizing a small part of its surface with a nuke isn't difficult, either; this will result in a small deflection. If you have enough time, a small deflection is completely sufficient to get it out of the "danger zone". If there are just two weeks to impact, there's no way to do anything. This is not "Armageddon" SciFi, this is real live. -- Bernd Paysan "If you want it done right, you have to do it yourself" http://bernd-paysan.de/

I think, as long they are used in olive-green bottles, the will still produce them. IIRC it was 150mm caliber :o If not, the will use several hundreds per hour :( I remember that Harris had some problem of testing the chips, because they fired all people with know-how :] Don`t know if intersil is much better in testing. This > is not "Armageddon" SciFi, this is real live. You are close to the problem. It is more like the chances of finding an object on a collision course is very small. The chance it will impact within two weeks of finding it are infinitesimal. What is much more likely is that we would have some number of years before an impact. Even then it would be dicey if we could intercept it. The problem is not supply of rockets, it is orbital mechanics. We can't just shoot a rocket to any point in the solar system at any time. It has to be orchestrated with the grand planetary scheme. In other words, it can take years to get to the object when it is still far enough away that we can make a significant change to its orbit. Fortunately, we would most likely have not just years but decades. -- Rick
