Usually it's told by hugh, when he claims some superlative for his
software.

The second lie is when he decides to attack people not buying that
unproven claim.

He then sticks to the second lie and other gratuitious insults for years
and years (instead of substantiating his original claim (which he still
can't, because it was lie #1)).

In the article i responded to, the "historical note" is a big lie
(actually a bunch of lies) and at the same time another mean and
gratuitious attack showing that he is really a psych.

Could be that he just doesn't get why people doubt the superiority of
his work or that he has a comprehension problem as soon as criticism
arises (adrenaline impaired?), but that can't be an excuse for such
nasty behavior.

PS: Hugh wrote that he's over 40, and he wrote that people over 40 can't
be trusted - go figure.

What's your problem to Hugh?

All I saw is that Hugh is pround of his work and, unfortunately, it unintentionally touch the wound of someone's ego inferiority.
"What! who you are can possibly do such a job? Where you put us in? garbage can?"

It's better to bring the wound out consciously, instead of let it control you unconsciously.

PS. A person over 40 sure he can criticize people over 40. It's completely logical as long as he is aware of the object he criticized. But this might to hard for a pygmy mind to understand.

I think that Hugh is very bright, but his post history shows that he
doesn't always react appropriately to criticism, warranted or otherwise.
I am almost positive that none of us here are perfect, but gigantic egos
abound, and this inevitably leads to bickering. I consciously filter
out all of the vitriol and insults being flung about, and try to see if
the remains are worthy of my attention, in my efforts to learn more about
the language in my spare time. The answer is usually "yes", because I'm
not easily offended by words, especially when they're not directed at me.
 :-)

As a 48-year-old American white boy, I agree, although it may be frowned
upon in sensitive company (think of a person of color loudly calling a
friend the "n-word" in mixed company). From what I've seen, this group
has a checkered history with regard to polite conversation, and I
believe that most of the sensitive company checked out long ago.

Mostly the mobbing.
I'm not good at ignoring that (especially when the new usenet reader
setup doesn't have filters configured yet - but i wouldn't want this
going on "under the rug" either).

Absolutely clear: "don't trust us" is a valid form of self-criticism.
I should have added a smiley in the first place.

: TODO 1 . ;
: FIXME TODO ;

If TODO is used frequently and is moved towards the root, will that
break FIXME ? I.e., how does FIXME find TODO when TODO was moved ?
How do you ensure words moved up or down are independent of other
words? TODO is compiled to an offset or address within FIXME, yes?
How do you change that, if you've moved it?

The answer to your question as to why more complex solutions aren't used
or haven't been is likely Occam's razor, or a slight variation of it.
The simplest solution generally wins. In this case, a linked-list is
all that was necessary.
