SubjectIs [compile] really used in this day and age?
Message-ID<1f5rjhjmiemct$.38hm9g0sq09e$.dlg@40tude.net>
For an example, I searched in the latest gforth distribution
(0.7.9_2014_04_02).

$ grep -r -i "\[compile\]" *fs
answords.fs:answord [COMPILE] CORE-EXT bracket-compile \ 6.2.2530 58
cross.fs:Cond: [compile] ( -- ) \ name
extend.fs:\ [COMPILE]
17may93jaw
extend.fs:: [compile] ( compilation "name" -- ; run-time ? -- ? ) \
core-ext bracket-compile
wordsets.fs:^ U> ^ UNUSED ^ VALUE ^ WITHIN ^ [COMPILE] ^ \
core-ext bracket-compile

Even with subdirectories (-r) I only could find only definitions of
[compile] in Forth (extend.fs) and the cross compiler(cross.fs). Further in
some comments and testing files (answords.fs/wordsets.fs).

So, does [compile] have any value?

Sure, one can do nicely without [COMPILE], and use POSTPONE (or
nothing) instead.

It may be still in use in legacy code; replacing it with POSTPONE or
(rarely) nothing is relatively easy, and that replacing can actually
be automated with a bit of effort.

I later found out that the '-r' option of grep (ubuntu and cygwin) does not
seem to work. A small cohort of files in subdirectories of the gforth-0.7.9
tar tree do still use [compile].

The cross-compiler has [compile] for forward references, because since these
words haven't been yet defined, the cross compiler needs a-priori knowledge
of their immediate state, and [compile] does provide that (i.e. it just
compiles them as forward references).

cd /
find . -name "*" -exec grep -Hi "\[COMPILE\]" {} \;

Or, use "sgsearch" at this link on the "utilities" page:
http://sallu.tuxfamily.org/

It's much better than "catfish" or "thunar".
