On Wednesday, June 25, 2014 6:25:08 PM UTC-4, Ilya Tarasov wrote: > The next question is, how good this standard to be helpful after 20 years? Can you provide any information about Forth popularity, or market share, or something else to proof the 1994-2014 years was better for the Forth than 1983-1994? It would be a false comparison in any event, since the broader environment in which it operated was different in 1994-2014 than 1983 to 1994. Its like the argument "US unemployment rates never increase after a minimum wage increase" under an institution in which it takes an act of Congress to raise the minimum wage and they avoid making that move in sluggish economic conditions. The argument "when the minimum wage is raised on one side of a county borderline but not on the other, there is no significant lost employment in the county with the minimum wage increase" is much stronger, because its comparing two parts of the same regional economy at the same points in time. Indeed, since the process in 1988 to 1994 codified much that was then being used by the more successful implementations of the late 80's, saying both "the period from 1983 to 1994 was good" and "the standard is bad" is an internal contradiction. It fixed much that was broken in Forth83, but didn't extend far enough to provide a development platform for desktop applications ~ which becomes an ever more pressing issue as tablets and cellphone provide resource capabilities once limited to desktop systems. Especially acute, to me, is the lack of a portable way to specify and create subdirectories of the current directory, specify and go to the user library directory and to save to, and retrieve from the user library directory and its subdirectories.

There are many reasons to implement a special word set... or maybe committee also predict an FPGA architecture evolution? I think no. So, if embedded area requires a different set of features, it is really important to changes something. Now you are talking about my area of interest, but I can't say I understand what you are referring to. Yes, often when implementing a stack machine it does not directly implement ANS Forth. Does that mean ANS should change their spec to specify something in the deeply embedded domain? The idea of a standard is to allow interworking of code across systems. I seriously doubt that specifying a standard for stack machines would be widely used or even used much at all. At that level the design is most likely being optimized for the application and has little use for a standard. -- Rick

Well I wasn't even thinking about ANSI Forth when I wrote that remark, but thinking about standards in general. I, in a way, am glad that I am not in the standards committee, because different people want and need different things, and I'm not sure how to accommodate all of those different wants and needs. I don't know everything. Forth is very flexible, and with that naturally comes a certain degree of irregularity. It may be a case of attempting to balance the dynamic opposites of order and chaos. Or could I be wrong? Perhaps there should be two standards, one for embedded systems, and one for consoles? One thing that comes to mind is something I read in Petzold a few months ago, to the effect that the Teletype is now obsolete, so we should now be embracing Windows programming. I tried to come up with a concept of a more modern paradigm for screen output which would be generic yet flexible. I have to admit that because different people need and want different things, that I was uncertain as to the value of such a thought experiment. I think that I know what I would do for myself, but uncertain if it would be embraced by others, or rejected. Perhaps if we could come up with not a consensus, but a general agreement where 80% of the Forth programmers decided that something would be good, then those things can be defined as electives/lexicons, and then the kernel would be flexible enough to accommodate different lexicons. Just a few ponderings. Jason

It's for building interfaces in a way based on the idea of "bootstrapping". The interfaces are composed of "behaviors" which are automatically arranged for you visually (though you can reorder them and insert "line breaks" just like text) and displayed in one of 2 modes (edit/use - Use mode hides unnecessary stuff). You will be able to update and test behaviors interactively and build interfaces that can be brought into a multitude of contexts, nesting interfaces in each other in order to build the ideal work environment for a visual application (in my case, for games of course). These behaviors, which would manifest sometimes as widgets like sliders and buttons, could also function as "plugins" that are invisible on the front end (in Use mode). They're going to be the visual analog of Words. This is a ways off right now, a lot of questions need to be answered mostly having to do with implementation and integration. > Perhaps if we could come up with not a consensus, but a general agreement where 80% of the Forth programmers decided that something would be good, then those things can be defined as electives/lexicons, and then the kernel would be flexible enough to accommodate different lexicons. This is what I want too.

C is very flexible, does it naturally come with a certain degree of irregularity? I.e., I can grasp that claim to be true in the Forth context, but not for every context. Rod Pemberton

C is not so flexible as Forth, more flexible than some other languages, so on the thesis, that would come with less irregularity than Forth, more irregularity than more straighlaced languages (Ada, maybe?)
