If you succeed its something in the Thunderbird settings (authentication, port, passwd, username, ssl... (better ask Rick for the settings)), otherwise user/password. Correct terminology will help. Your aren't "subscribed" to news.eternal-september.org, you are logged in. To subscribe to a newsgroup you need to right click on "newsgroups" in the left pane. Select "subscribe...". That is the control box for adding newsgroups to your list in the left pane. If you need more help, just ask. -- Rick

This happened to me the first time I tried to configure a newsreader outside Google Groups. This may help: 1) you have to register with eternal september first in order to get an ID. You'll pick a username and password when you register http://news.eternal-september.org/ 2) you have to configure your newsreader to point to eternal september and to provide username & password to authenticate, e.g. Host Name: news.eternal-september.org Connection type: Username & Password Enter username Enter password If you only see the eternal september groups, it means something's probably gone wrong in steps 1 or 2. Good luck. Assad

The part 2 was tricky for me at least when I switched from google groups to Thunderbird. I had no place to enter username and password until I dropped to connection without SSL. So try normal NNTP protocol. Best regards, Hannu Vuolasaho

Hi I recently bought an Arduino to evaluate an LCD, and I found the hardware unsuitable for production use - fine for experimenting on a benchtop. There is so much more than the micro-controller chip to make a working system - power supply, noise immunity, fixing holes, connectors etc. So I like the idea of well designed hardware... I have been looking at I2C, and there are some nice bus extenders, faster versions etc these days. I tend to add I2C on my boards, just in case I need to add something later. As for success : I would make a distinction between making something excellent, that can be seen to be good by people who take the trouble to look, and making something popular, using the latest mobile-phone spin-off chips. I think that the principle that a "better mouse trap" will automatically be successful is not true today - but there will always be a market for anything that is made with honesty and integrity, with the intention to make it excellent for the sake of excellence. > We ARE continuing Good luck with your project! This has been discussed around Internet thoroughly. And Arduino is good prototyping platform. You can get all the wanted bells and whistles as shield. But to make something usable, layout your own pcb. And proper use of Arduino board is to flash it with AmForth or Flashforth. I prefer AmForth and its shell. The shell takes care so many things I wouldn't want to care like converting register names to addresses. Amforth-shell is written Python so it is rather platform agnostic. I think that kind of enhancement should be good for developing. > So I like the idea of well designed hardware... Well designed hardware comes with enclosure. I really hate it when there is random devboard and it doesn't fit in anything common form factor. Arduino doesn't provide mechanical drawings of their products. At least I haven't seen official documents. There isn't actually need to make the enclosure, just pick one from Hammond and make the board right size so it fits. My preference is Hammond 1519 cases. There are slots for boards and I like them being translucent. Too bad they are plastic so everything gets through it. Maybe some die cast aluminium box would be best for good hardware. Best regards, Hannu Vuolasaho

For a specific project - fine. But we are coming out with at least 10 different I2C boards. Suppose you want 2 LCDs on your front panel? And 3 switches and 4 LEDs? Or something else?

But we are coming out with at least 10 different I2C boards. Suppose you want 2 LCDs on your front panel? And 3 switches and 4 LEDs? Or something else? You didn't get his point. He is saying you can design your own boards, but if you lay them out to the same shape and connector arrangement as commonly available boards there will be many enclosures available at a very low price. I recently saw a link to a Hammond site where they have enclosures off the shelf for the rPi, BBB and a couple of other popular SBCs. Nothing wrong with being form and size compatible and reaping the benefits. -- Rick

When choosing that kind of neutral enclosure with ribs, I can stack PCBs to the ribs and making little bit lower cards, it is possible to put displays etc to lid. Another option is to use those pcb holders. Then cards are horizontally stacked. I like to stack my design on many boards and provide many test points to do those things I forgot when I designed the board. Strange thing is that no commercial development board ever fit to this and they always forget mounting holes. But your design has the right amount of holes. Two mount points rocks and four twists the board. Three is always in like it should be. Best regards, Hannu Vuolasaho

The AmForth shell does not work unmodified, since the FF prompt handling is different from AmForth. But I am also happy that FF works without any shell using XON/XOFF or RTS/CTS so that it can be used more genericly from any terminal emulator. The ultimate shell would be an interactive tethered system. It could be written in for example Python. Or even in Forth :-) BR Mike -- http://flashforth.sourceforge.net

No I hadn't heard about that, but have looked at some of the press coverage now. I hope both that you are recovering physically and that you're not too shook up psychologically. Wow, this is one of the crazier incidents I've heard of. My thoughts are with you.
