I just ran across some three-year-old code where I'd ran into this same problem:
: prompt-read ( c-addr1 u1 -- c-addr u2 )
next-pad begin 2dup cr type ." : " pad 512 accept
dup if nip nip pad swap exit then
drop again ;
: prompt-for-cd ( -- )
s" Title" prompt-read trim
s" Artist" prompt-read trim \ <-- oops!
... ;
And came up with this solution:
create pad1 512 allot
create pad2 512 allot
variable 'pad pad1 'pad !
: pad ( -- a ) 'pad @ ;
: next-pad ( -- a )
pad pad1 = if pad2 else pad1 then 'pad ! ;
: prompt-read ( c-addr1 u1 -- c-addr u2 )
next-pad ...same as before... ;
*facepalm*
It worked well enough.

Your previous post had alreay solved the problem for me (later on, I'll post code). Right now, I'm trying to save the heap-allocated c-addr and the count number (u) on a matrix. I'm not able to pass a parameter (number of rows) in a colon definition (for a 2d-array). Passing a parameter in run-time is interesting, because you can ask the user about how many drugs he'll prescribe. Then you create an array on-the-fly. And then you move the ( c-addr u -- ) to the array. Later on, you take these numbers of the array, and TYPE them - there's the expanded string definition! Thanks once more for your insightful feddback. I'm learning quite a lot here on c.l.f. -- Hank Lenzi

In the old days, PAD was defined as being some distance above HERE, but now the ANS-Forth document (6.2.2000) just describes it as a "transient region" which doesn't really tell you anything. Even way back in 1984 when I was learning Forth, and was 18 years old, I knew that PAD was essentially useless. It was still useless in 1994 when the ANS-Forth standard came out, and it is still useless today, and it will still be useless when(if) Forth-200x comes out. Most likely, PAD was just a quick hack that Charles Moore did to get some program to work. He was writing commercial software with Forth from the very beginning, so he had deadlines, which implies that he used quick-and-dirty solutions. I very much doubt that he ever intended PAD to be standardized. There was no heap in the early days, so it was necessary to use "transient regions" for temporary storage --- but this is a very crude and non-robust solution --- just use the heap, which is the modern way.
