And once more, with conviction:
: default: compile dup [compile] of ; immediate
[ I got the dup and of the wrong way around ;-) ]
: TEST ( n -- )
CASE
1 OF 100 ENDOF
2 OF 200 ENDOF
3 OF 300 ENDOF
DEFAULT: 999 ENDOF
ENDCASE
.
;
1 TEST
100 ok
2 TEST
200 ok
4 TEST
999 ok
Shame about the trailing ENDOF, but I do think it's an improvement.

Okay, this is my last post on this subject, I promise :-)
It's possible to do away with the trailing ENDOF, by setting a flag in default: and checking it in ENDCASE, thusly (tested in GForth):
variable (default)
: default: ( -- )
postpone dup
postpone of
true (default) !
; immediate
: endcase ( -- )
(default) @ if
false (default) !
postpone endof
postpone endcase
then
; immediate
: test
case
1 of 100 endof
2 of 200 endof
3 of 300 endof
default: 999
endcase
.
;
1 test
2 test
3 test
4 test
Note in the above that ENDCASE is re-defined in terms of its old self, with a little bit of trickery included.
Regards
Mark

This should work on any standard system, but if you want a Gforth-specific solution, it's easier: Variable (defaulting) : default: (defaulting) on postpone drop ; immediate compile-only : endcase ( case-sys -- ) >r cs-drop (defaulting) @ 0= IF postpone drop THEN r> n-thens (defaulting) off ; immediate compile-only This is definitely an improvement, any objections? I added an implementation to Gforth git without using a variable - the state of defaulting is on the stack there. -- Bernd Paysan "If you want it done right, you have to do it yourself" http://bernd-paysan.de/

Here the new FlashForth case with default .. endof.
I think its just as well to have endof in the default branch
and not try to make endcase more complicated.

But forth is a nice interactive assembler for small flash systems like flashforth. And I like it. Could it be possible to insert a new word DEFAULT that does the DROP instead of ENDCASE ?? Mike http://flashforth.sourceforge.net

Sometimes these comments come from people who have trouble taking enough time to get to the productivity stage with Forth. In my experience, Forth is more like the human languages I have learned in that early on one has trouble saying anything very meaningful but then after a critical mass of vocabulary is acquired one can converse successfully. Or it's a troll. ;-) Brian Fox

In the case of the ANS-Forth technical committee, Forth is a screwed-up mess (CASE is just one of many problems with ANS-Forth). This doesn't mean that Forth "by its very nature" is a screwed up mess --- I'm designing a Forth that will be suitable for writing "simple, reliable and maintainable source code" and it will still be "an emulation of a low-level stack-based assembler instruction set."

It's a unmoderated Usenet group, so no one. If your post didn't make it to Google Groups, it likely got lost. Google Groups slurps Usenet from everywhere it seems. It seems, you're posting using Google Groups. They might moderate Google Groups including posts to Usenet groups, or they may have had some parsing or posting issue with their new Web interface, etc. Personally, I'd expect posts through Google Groups would show up in Google Groups, even if not sent out to Usenet. But, it might be they post to a major Usenet provider and read back posts from them. In which case, it could've gotten lost. But, most of that is just speculation... FYI, I see these two posts of yours on two of three Usenet servers. I'm not sure, but the one server might filter out posts from Google Groups. Maybe, try AIOE.org to post, or Eternal September using a Usenet capable browser, or a newsreader. Rod Pemberton

Agreed.
In "8th" there are three "case"-like words: "caseof", "when" and "when!".
"when" takes as an argument an array of pairs of words. For each pair,
8th evaluates the first word in the pair and if evaluates to "true", the
second word is evaluated and the "when" stops there. If none of the
pairs evaluates "true", then the last item in the array is evaluated (if
there is a single item at the end; this is the "default" case if it exists).
"when!" is the same as "when", except that it continues and executes the
second item in *every* pair which evaluates "true"
"caseof" is a selection statement: it takes an array or an object and an
appropriate key (number or string, depending on whether an array or
object was given). It retrieves the item corresponding to the key; if
there is such an item, then if it is a word it is evaluated otherwise it
is just put in TOS.
A simple example:
[ "zero", "one", "two", "three" ] 2 caseof
will return "two", since that is the second item in the array it was given.
Similarly:
[
( dup 0 = ) , ( zero ) ,
( dup 1 = ) , ( one ) ,
( dup 2 = ) , ( two ) ,
( dowhatever )
] 2 when
would execute "two"

If there are no Forth control-flow words remaining, then I'd argue that it's a new or different language using a Forth backend, e.g., assembly, Gcode, etc. Rod Pemberton

How much Forth must still remain? How do *you* know what has been presented to you as Forth is? A few people getting together, voting on something and stamping it "FORTH" means little. Unless one needs to comply with what others claim to be Forth (and at this point in Forth's history it hardly matters) one is free to do as one pleases. Chances of success are surely no worse than the choices TC's have made and would have you follow. You might actually feel the better for having made your own choices and wearing the consequences - because then you are free to correct mistakes and don't have to spend your years giving out lame rationales for things that even you don't believe.

You are one of the few people making any sense! Mark Wills has made the point that there can be multiple Forth standards. If Forth-200x were to fix the mistakes of ANS-Forth and start making sense, but no longer compile and run ANS-Forth programs, ANS-Forth would continue to be a standard for those who want to stick with it. Gradually they might migrate over to the new standard, but they can stick with ANS-Forth as long as it is providing what they need. A little Balkanization is a good thing. Having everybody under one dictator is the road to ruin, even if the dictator is benevolent. For example, Europe is better off as a collection of small sovereign countries, rather than a single gigantic country --- the same is true of Forth. The people who get stuck on supporting legacy software, are MBAs who don't know how to program. They think that they invested money in having software written, and they want their investment to last forever. They hate the idea of rewriting code --- that is like buying a truck and then throwing it away a year later because the new trucks available provide better fuel mileage. Programmers are much less concerned about supporting legacy software because they know that it is often easier to rewrite code than to continue maintaining it forever --- rewriting code is not like buying a new truck, because a lot of the code (and certainly the concepts) from the old program can get carried over to the new program. The MBAs can stick with ANS-Forth and never-mind the fact that there is a new standard, and they can hire novice programmers to maintain their software for them. The real programmers writing new programs can migrate to whatever standard makes sense to them.
